The period from 1966-01-01 to 1982-11-04 almost 17 years with only one area code split, was by far the longest period of stability in the history of the North American Numbering Plan. Over 40 new area codes were added during 1997 alone.

I'm from Port Arthur and wondered why College Station had same area code when I went to A&M.Biz Ag said:To call Houston from College Station my freshman year I all to do was dial 1+ and my home phone number.Diggity said:

BCS was then assigned the 409 area code until 979 came along later.

Will Lina pay for area code camp?
My oldest sister got a phone in her room and it was 281. Had to have been between 1978 and 1980. She graduated from high school in spring of 82. Our home number was a 713-376-xxxx in that same time. That was nice to be able to just dial seven digits on the rotary phone.Buford T. Justice said:
I was just thinking that SE Texas was 713 until '81 or so.

The 281 area code wasn't introduced until November, 1996.randy828 said:My oldest sister got a phone in her room and it was 281. Had to have been between 1978 and 1980. Yep.
We went from 713 to 281 out in Katy. That's when I knew I was suburban trash.
Think it was the beltway that was the dividing line but may have made that up.

Did you have cool naming conventions like KLondike 5?

Did they force migrate some 713 numbers over to 281? Maybe all the burbs back when they maybe cared about keeping them separate? Strongly feel the number we had growing up (80s Woodlands) is the same today and its 281.
