Moving to Katy this month. Any recommendations for home owners insurance? I have USAA for my current home in Nebraska, and their quote of $773/mo seemed high. The house does have a pool and outdoor Bar/Kitchen structure, but still seems steep to me.

We went with Amica, and they've been good to us. Paid us very fairly for every major claim we've had, didn't try to nickel & dime us or get out of paying.

I've quoted with USAA twice and both times they were much more expensive and had much higher deductibles. We have 1% deductible for wind, $1000 for everything else. The lowest deductible USAA offered us was 2% wind & $2000 for all else. And I've been a member with USAA for almost 30 years, banked with them since I was 16, and insurance with them since I was 22. Still insanely expensive. And their service has gone to crap lately anyway.

This is about what I pay in Katy, but totally dependent on the coverage. I havent been able to switch providers either because my roof is too old or other quotes didn't save any money. The Houston area has very expensive rates.

I hear ya! Been with USAA since 1986. Been good here in Omaha, but jeez, what a jump. I'll check out Amica.

Just call Casey at Goosehead and he'll shop it for you

I haven't been happy with Goosehead and finally completely dropped them. I hate having to haggle to get them to drop the fee to shop rates so switched home and landlord insurance a while ago when my carrier jacked up rates. Kept auto/umbrella because that rate remained competitive, and I liked my agent. She left and the new one sucked.

Progressive notified me that they were dropping my umbrella because my home doesn't have needed limits. I called goosehead and sent them my home policy. They said they couldn't beat the rate but I needed to transfer it over to them as the agent in order to help.

I questioned that and told them I wouldn't transfer the policy to them nor should I need to. They have my coverage and it suffices Progressive's requirements so just update it....They said ok.

Well about a month later they still hadn't updated it so I signed the forms needed to transfer my progressive policies over to Matt at Diversified Insurance (poster here) and he got it all handled within a couple of days.

I'll still use Liere to shop around but they haven't had good rates for me the last 4 or so years....

AAA is growing in Houston, give them a call.

+1 for AAA. We have them bundled, and although we're in San Antonio, our increases over the last 7 years have been reasonable. Go to a local office or call them.

Stay away from Casey and Goosehead. Casey disappeared after getting my business and passed me off to someone else, who has also disappeared.

Best decision we made was getting out form under Goosehead.

I'm not sure that's fair to say about Casey. As I understand, Casey moved up to more of a management role at Goosehead and now has, or had, agents working for him. If that's the case, it would make sense he would pass you off to someone else. Casey was usually very good to work with. That said, the customer service at Goosehead has really gone downhill since the Casey days. I am shopping all my policies right now and I think this is the year Goosehead doesn't offer me the most competitive policy. State Farm looks to be the leader in the clubhouse coming in about flat to where I was last year making some small adjustments to coverages.

It's plenty fair. I had the same experience. He moved up, fine. Respond to requests to run quotes (especially when they don't do this without being prompted) from current customers, or at least pass it off to someone who will respond, or lose business.

We can agree to disagree. I don't know Casey beyond him shopping quotes for me years ago, but I don't see him pumping Goosehead on TexAgs, anymore, and I don't think he's posted in a couple years. Take all the shots you want at Goosehead, but I have no idea what Casey's new role is so I'm not sure it's fair to take shots directly at him. We can agree to disagree. I don't want to derail this thread anymore, so I'll leave it at that.

As I stated before, I am nearing the end of shopping my policies and my local State Farm agent looks to be my best option.

Told the broker to look into Sage Sure....was about $3K cheaper.

Is it great insurance...no clue.

I'm with Sagesure and just got my renewal. Over the last 5 years it's gone from $3200 to $10,500 with this renewal. To add insult to injury, I lost a large section of my roof in the hurricane this year and they denied my claim because I "patched" to roof too soon. I'm done with them.

That was my experience as well. Stopped using them about 3 years ago. I went with Kin for my most recent home policy.

Thanks. I checked back with Liere who have offered competitive rates through Traveler's - even doing better than what I just got quoted from Kin online. Thanks for the alternatives.

I've been with State Farm, USAA and Amica in various homes in Katy over the years. Now With Amica for the second time, good rates and service.

I like that they don't waste any money advertising, their service quality and rates earn them work.

i just called amica - $10,400 annual premium on $479k dwelling -1%. Ouch.

State farm $6,000 on $650k - 1%
USAA - $2,900 on $828k - 2% minimum required

the dwelling replacement cost estimators on these are all over the place.

also left goosehead years ago and won't go back

That's crazy, my quotes were the opposite - Amica was 6k for 1% and Allstate and usaa were around 10k.

I'm an agent with Allstate and would be glad to take a look at it for you and any other members that would like to shop their policies. We have been a lot more competitive in the Houston market recently and are one of the few carriers still doing 1% wind/hail deductibles. My email is ckeith@allstate.com

Quick plug - I'd suggest folks in the Houston area reach out because the quote I got from Chris here with Allstate was WAY better than anything Liere could get me or what I priced on my own through Amica or USAA with the same or better coverage as what I had. My policy also now includes 1% wind/hail instead of 2% that I previously had.

Like with all insurance companies, this rate could go way up next year, but the current pricing to bundle both home and auto was the best I could find by far.
