The project is supported by Senate Bill 1057, which allows Houston to access the state's portion of incremental hotel occupancy tax in the area, ensuring funding without burdening local taxpayers.
So that's good I guess.

Real nice bum shelter the state will be building for Houston.

Where have you been? The first 3D video renderings of the concept plans for UG 59/45 came out in like 2014. The question was what to do with the pierce elevated and how long until funding would be available.

They say 10 years so I'll bet 17 until it's 100% completely done. If midtown wasn't already dead and gone it def will not be recovering until it's time to "regentrify" when my 4 year old gets out of TAMU in 2043.

I look forward to telling her how dad used to hit the bars in midtown and Washington corridor "the first time it was cool" in 2012-2017 time frame

The upside is this should be relatively quick and cheap and cause minimal disruption!

SImilar, but probably more closer in scope to Spur 366 through Dallas. They put about 3 blocks of the freeway under ground level to have a park on top of the freeway and better pedestrian access. It definitely felt safer walking over a freeway at night when I went for a Stars game than walking under one.

Ya, I feel like having underground freeways like that just gives more drainage options to keep water away from buildings. It will also be a nice little Darwinian filter.

the freeways flooding and directing water away from businesses and houses isn't really a bad thing if it's designed that way. if people are too stupid to not drive into water, that's on them.

Regarding the linked news story, I like how this project is getting a bunch of blowback and protests about Polk St when its the highway project that is doing that

Haha yup, the only thing this GRB expansion is doing is taking away a hotel parking garage and The Rustic, and I wouldn't be shocked if The Rustic was looking for an out since their location puts them at the end of a future dead end street next to a giant decade long construction project.

From the looks of the image, it seems they could put a bridge over the freeway for Polk like they have one for Leeland, but the new plans have park area where Polk st is near Toyota Center.

The I-45 requires connections and flyovers of the lanes from underground over the I-69 northbound lanes and continuing on to the Gulf Freeway and vice versa. You can see from this schematic that the I-45 lanes are basically at current ground grade level at Polk Street (see the gridlined section in middle bottom that is scaled to the aerial image above it). No bridge is possible at Polk.

Also the bridge you refer to at Leeland does go over I-69, but it runs underneath I-45. Basically I-45 will be an overpass at Leeland, and an underpass at Lamar. Polk in the middle will be barely above freeway lane level as it transitions into and out of the underground segments. Houston First's rendering doesn't accurately reflect what the freeway lanes are doing. The middle lanes should be rising and going over Leeland.

A bunch of government types got rich off of that deal...a bunch of graft and corruption and it took way longer than it should have. But hey, it's nice now.
