Anyone ever received an overstay charge from Professional Parking Management, which manages the garage on Dunstan at Rice Village?

We paid for two hours but our dinner was slow and we left 26 minutes late. Received a letter in the mail with a $40 charge, upped to $85 if we don't pay in 30 days.

Wondered how legit this was and if they really come after you. I mean, it seems like most laws and regulations are voluntary these days.

You agreed to their terms and conditions when you chose to park in their garage. You exceeded your time and violated them. If you don't pay it, it will be sent to collections.

Next time I enter a garage I'm gonna stop and read all the fine print on the signage.

I would imagine the terms are like any parking lot regarding time. I guess you can be glad they didn't tow you.

did you inform the restaurant that you had a 2 hour limit? Could you have paid for 3 hours initially to be in the safer side of time? Hope the meal was good you probably got the chicken.

Definitely could have -- should have -- paid for three hours. It was my car but someone else paid the parking.

We had dinner at Coppa Osteria (mushroom ravioli) so it was very good. But with the extra $40 I got dinged for parking I could have ordered a better bottle of wine. LOL

I figured they would simply charge the card used to pay for parking with another hour ($4). Not send us a bill for $40 with a $5 charge for paying online.

Legal extortion. Lesson learned.

It's not extortion. It's you not taking responsibility for yourself. Next time, stick to the suburbs where the parking is free.

Ah, yeah, that's probably what I would expect.

Still a lot cheaper than getting towed (ask me how I know!).

Yep. Glad I didn't get towed.

I got a similar letter from a parking management company because according to them I didn't pay when leaving, which was true. However, I was going to a concert and paid the "attendant" out front to park there. Turned out it was a scam so I didn't pay the parking company. I explained it to them and told them I was happy to pay what I owed as if I did park there for that number of hours rather than a $120 surcharge. The foreign customer service person must have not had a translation for my explanation and after back and forth with each other for a week I think they just gave up and marked the ticket as resolved. Its been 2 years and no one has come after me.

How does that parking garage work? You put your ticket in to leave? Why didn't they charge you the difference then?

if the "penalty" for not paying is the same as the prepayment cost, there's zero incentive to pay. A rational person would just choose not to pay and hope the meter maid doesn't notice.

Some newer garage systems have you prepay when you arrive and scan your license plate and then scan it again when you leave without having you stop to put in a ticket. If you stay beyond your allotted time, you get an $80 bill in the mail. It makes more money for the garage owner as it just takes one sucker paying the $80 to make up for those who overstayed by $5 more and would have paid that when leaving. Its clearly a scummy business model.

Never heard of that. Really messed up. Is there a way to pay more prior to leaving?

That garage uses one of the parking apps (Parkmobile, IIRC), and it's really easy to add time from your phone if you start to run short.

My question is pretty simple here...Or what?!

A parking company, not government owned, gives me a ticket and it is right in the freaking trash. They have no standing or ability to go after your credit. Highly doubt any lien would pass muster. Just don't park their anymore.

Exactly this.

You pay via the app when you arrive, and select the amount you think you need.

When you leave, there is no person there. They just take a pic of your license plate you as you leave and compare time stamps with what you paid for upfront.

We were in my car but I didn't pay the parking since someone else in my party already had the app. I didn't know how long she paid for or that we had overextended and she clearly didn't notice.

Expensive lesson. Maybe someone else can learn from my mistake.

Tell you what I'd do, I'd tell them to go pound sand. No way am I paying that crap. Then I would spend the next four years dealing with them sending me to collections and spending too much time effing with it when I should have just coughed up the money. But dammit, I showed them.

I paid. Because I wanted to take responsibility for myself.
