4th of July in '95.
We took a 2 week vacation with some of my parent's friends and their son that was a week at Lake Travis and then a week floating the Guadalupe.
We started out the week on Lake Travis camping in Pace Bend park. We were pulling our boat while their friends were pulling their camper, and on the way to Austin, they had a blowout on the camper, so we were put behind by a few hours. I remember my mom calling the park from a payphone to let them know we were on our way and that we would probably arrive shortly after they closed, and they told us they would keep someone at the gate so we could check in. Finally got the tire changed and we were on our way. My first experience with 6th Street was rolling down it in my dad's truck pulling his boat while following a camper being towed. Anyway, we arrive at the entrance and they were closed. Nobody was there to open the gate and let us in, so we just slept right there at the gate. 4th of July related because we took the boat out on the lake to watch a big firework show the night of the 4th, and I remember there being hundreds of boats around.
Had a great time for the week and then went to a campground on the Guadeloupe to go float the river a few times and had a blast. I know the river was running low because I remember my dad joking that it won't take long to float because we'll be walking most of the way. We also had one of those water balloon slingshots that were popular back then, and my friend was holding it up with his hands while the thing the balloon sat in was being held down with his foot, and he launched one into the air toward the river, and it came down and nailed some lady right in the forehead. We were like the movers in Happy Gilmore when he hit the lady with the golf ball, and we booked it out of there.
Also, I know it was '95 because Little Texas' "Amy's Back in Austin" was always on the radio, and I can't help but think of that vacation everytime I hear that song.
