Memorial Park at one time was a WW1 training area

Quote:

From 1917 to 1923, the land where the park currently exists was the site of Camp Logan, a U.S. Army training camp named after Illinois U.S. Senator and Civil War General John A. Logan.

And I think they've found shells there in the not distant past.

I'm guessing someone was digging for utilities and found buried ordnance. Hopefully no chemicals!

There's a ton of history associated with Camp Logan.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_riot_of_1917
Quote:

A mutiny and riot by 156 soldiers from the all-black 24th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army took place on August 23, 1917 in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred within a climate of overt racist hostility from members of the all-white Houston Police Department (HPD) against members of the local black community and black soldiers stationed at Camp Logan. Following an incident where police officers arrested and assaulted black soldiers, many of their comrades mutinied and marched to Houston. There they opened fire and killed eleven civilians (including a minor, Fred E. Winkler) and five policemen. Five soldiers also died, (four to friendly fire and one to suicide). In accordance with the military laws of the time, 118 soldiers were tried in three courts-martial. This was the largest murder trial in US history.

There is also a section of Buffalo Bayou that is a no dredge or dig zone because it is packed full of Civil War ordinance dumped there by the Confederate garrison after the end of the war so that the Union invaders would not have access to it.

My 75 year old grandfather didn't fight in and win WW1 just so a bunch of jackwads could leave their **** all over Memorial Park.
