Running over people with golf carts and having them sue.

Tort reform limits the amount the city has to pay, but still…

Isn't Kubosh the attention-hooring attorney or former bail bondsman that challenged red light camera legality, planned to run a red light where there was a camera and announced the time and place he would do it, and then got a ticket from an HPD officer parked nearby waiting for him to run the red light?

If it's the same guy, he sounds smart.

I've known this guy for many years. Greater than zero chance he was looking for an "opportunity."

Quote:

Tuesday, the jury unanimously found in Branch's favor, awarding him $500,000. He was only asking for $200,000...Under Texas's tort law, the city only has to make good on half of the jury's verdict. Personal injury claims are capped at $250,000.

Sounds like at least one guy on that jury is a genius. Awarding more than he's asking to make sure he's made whole. Wonder if they jury was told about that little loophole or (more likely) that someone in the jury room knew that fact.

You mean John Branch?

I'm guessing this is the same guy who ran for city council and didn't make the runoff.

Wait. The guy that got run over was a former candidate for city council?

Yes. And apparently there was confusion over whether the golf cart was driven by then-councilmember Michael Kubosh, or then-Fire Chief Sam Pena (picture at the link shows Pena in the driver's seat).

And from a different version of the story:

Quote:

Branch said the impact of the crash aggravated his existing disabilityhe already had a prosthetic legand led to further medical complications. "They told me the only way to fix it was to take out the total prosthetic, go deeper into the bones, and replace the whole prosthetic," he told reporters.

Adding insult to injury, Branch recalled a moment when Kubosh allegedly mocked him after the incident. "He held up a screw in his hand and said, 'Hey, I found the screw that's part of your leg." Branch says this exchange caused emotional pain. "It was like he was taking advantage of and mocking a handicapped person."
