I just found out at the end of last week that I will be relocating to Amarillo from Beaumont within the next two weeks or so. I really have no knowledge of the area. I grew up in West Texas, but down closer to Midland/Odessa.

Really, just looking for some info on parts of town to look at for housing. Probably will not buy, but look to lease a house as this is not a long-term relocation. Probably only a year or so. Also, no kids so schools are not much of an issue. Looking more so for a nice reasonable neighborhood. Any info anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Newest/nicest is generally on the southwest side of town, though there are nice neighborhoods in many parts of town....as well as between Canyon and Amarillo and in Canyon.

What part of town will you be working in? (Or what company)

I'll be working from home and driving all over the place like Pampa, Canyon, Clovis, Portales, etc. However, I'll be based out of the house.

According to http://www.bestplaces.net/col/?salary=50000&city1=54807000&city2=54803000, living in Amarillo costs about 74% of the national average compared to 75% in Beaumont.

Wow, leaves you wide open. Unless you are dead set on living in a big town, I wonder if you can find a cheap house in one of the smaller outlying towns where the Ag economy has been down most recent years.

I think it will probably be easier to find a place in Amarillo, but I've contacted a couple of realtors to see what my options are.

Southwest side of town is nice, but as mentioned, there are other areas as well. The Wolflin Village area is the "old money" area of town. Nice area. Finally, you might consider looking on the north side of Canyon.

It is in the Woodlands which is a pretty good area of town.

Selling a house in Amarillo, actually. Great location, good neighbors and close to a park, shopping and restaurants.

Basil Docs changed its name for some weird reason. I don't know if it is under new ownership or what. It is now something like 151 degree something or other (I saw it on the news and don't really remeber). I don't know what was wrong with Basil Docs I thought it did the job.
