Canyon,

I read your thread over on Outdoors. It is a shame that hunting has changed so much up there. It started changing in the Hart area in the late 70's-early 80's with all the crazy pheasant hunters that just came to town and started hunting where ever they wanted.

But back in the old days the farmers that had Greyhounds would have free passage over anywhere they wanted. A lot of times they would show up at the feed store and someone would have purchased a couple of bags of dog food for them.

They spent the time between the end of harvest and the start of spring hunting coyotes and drinking whiskey. We would have a stray Greyhound come to the house and hang out with our bird dogs on a weekly basis. You would call the owner and he would stop by and get it the next time he was out in his truck with the boxes.

I am sure it is almost impossible to hunt with Greyhounds up there now. When they get to chasing a coyote they will not stop for anything until they catch him. I never knew anyone who could train them to come back to a whistle or something. They may chase that coyote for a couple of miles with a few fights mixed in before it ended. There is no way that you could hunt them now without trespassing about ten times. That is a shame.

C- I know you already knew all of this, it was just fun to reminisce on some good old times growing up.

I have had those jackasses run through my fences, hot wire gates. Cows get out . Some come out of Kansas. They have warrents out for them now.

I have noticed that truck while jogging. Yes Killer, I said jogging---9 mile this morning. There is another truck with dogs I see a lot in Canyon. It is an older truck, local guy.

Killer-K,

You're the guy who knew Paul Armstrong, correct? Good man. Didn't he use to have greyhounds? Love the dogs, just despise some of the doooshes who own them.

Don't know if you also knew Glenn Phillips '43. Father of Pat (white Band CO '74) and Mike (Combined Band CO '74) and Glenda '77. All good folks.

And while I would not have liked the greyhounds on my place, and I don't want the coyotes killed, that's not a huge thing. It's driving his blankety blank 3/4 ton pickup across my place.

blw9108, don't know how much of the other threads you read....this is about 99.999999% certainly the offender, though he was driving a similar rig on a 3/4 ton Ford.

And he lives in Lake Tanglewood.

Canyon,

Just south of Paul's house there was a fence with a corner post that they hung all of the coyotes on over the years. It was huge.

There were three other farmers in that general area that hunted them together. They were all of same ilk as Paul and could hunt anywhere they wanted.

Once I learned that coyotes did more to help quail population than hurt it, I really was not too concerned about killing them anymore.

I do not remember the Phillips family. I will have to check on that name.

The Phillip clan was probably enough older than you that you wouldn't know them. I think the kids actually attended high school in Olton, though the house was near Hart. In the 1980s, Glenn started a feed store on north Date street in Plainview.

That is BS.

If he wants to hunt coyotes, then that is fine. But he better check with all the local property owners that he might run across before he does. And running thru fences?!!? Wow

A friend of mine in Oslo used to regularly hunt coyotes throughout high school.

Then one day he captured a coyote pup. Instead of killing it, he raised it as a pet. After a year or so, he decided that the coyote was so smart and such a good pet that he quit killing coyotes completely.

UPDATE: Got a call back from the sheriff's office. I don't think they originally planned to do much about this clown, but it turns out that mine was the second call on him. He had been complained about for doing the same thing, three days earlier. And apparently he was also involved in an incident 2-3 years ago where he was hunting on land where he had permission. That wasn't the problem. "Rounds whizzing over the heads" of folks nearby was the problem.

No surprise that an idiot/jerk is always an idiot/jerk.

Hey CanyonAg77,

Not sure I know you but I know the Phillips Family well. I used to work for Glenn at his feed store in Plainview in High School and I run into Mike on a fairly regular basis. Mr. Phillips and I would sit in his store and he would tell me stories of his days at A&M for hours. Wonderful memories. I now live near Wolfforth which is just SW of Lubbock.

Good luck catching your trespasser.

Canyon,

Anything night/hunting/trespassing related I always call the game warden. Our guys up here are very good at getting the job done when dealing with guys like this.

Desert P,

I grew up in Hale Center, and was a BQ, which is how I met the Phillips clan. If you're a member of the Association of Former Students, it's not hard figuring out who I am based on (current) home town and class year. I'm at the top of the list (alphabetically)

CanyonAg,

My family is from Hale Center. Do you remember the Turners? I think they would have been around your year in high school -- Viki, Eddie, Kathie and Terri?

Just curious....

Know them all, went to church with them. Good people, knew their folks, etc. The ones closest to my age were Kathy (3 classes ahead of me) and Terri (one class behind me)

Kathleen came down to A&M for a conference once when I was at A&M, and I took her to lunch at Rudder Tower, back when it was open to all.

The only ones I see very often are Eddie (and his wife Susie) when visiting my folks at church.

I also knew the family of Hubert and Joe Turner, I believe Hubert was a cousin of Cecil's. His son Joe farmed across from the house where I grew up, and I spent a lot of time visiting with him as a kid while he changed water in front of our house.

I'm going to venture a guess you might be Mike & Kathy's kid?

That's so neat you know the whole family! I'm actually Viki's daughter -- my brother and I both went to A&M -- he was class of '99 and I was '00.

Mom guessed who you were because she said you and your brother were the only ones from H.C. she knew that were Aggies! I also chatted with Terri tonight and she said to tell you hello. She said she was sure I'd recognize your folks if I saw them. I grew up spending every holiday in Hale Center with my grandparents and Sundays at FBC.

My husband and I just moved to Lubbock last May, so it's been fun being around Mom's family a lot more often.

Nice to "TexAgs style" meet you! It's a small world!

Oh yes, I should have guessed. I should have asked my mom which Turner grand kid was the Aggie, she remembers all those kinds of things.

And yes, back when I headed off to A&M, you could count the Aggies in Hale Center on the fingers of one hand. There's a few more now.

It's a sign of old age, I guess, as I recall your mom and all your aunts and uncles. I still think of them as the teenagers we were back then, not so much as the old farts we are now.

We have a son class of '09 and a daughter who is USAFA '11. Time flies.

Tell them all hi. We were all lucky to grow up during some great years in a great small town.

Welcome to the Panhandle/South Plains. I saw your posts on the United Spirit Arena. We quit going to football at Tech because it got so crazy. Lots of good folks in Lubbock, but there is a scary minority of jerks that you have to watch for and avoid. I think you'll be better off at basketball. As others have said, not so much drinking, and Coach Knight tries to keep the crowd in check, as opposed to the way Coach Leach encouraged jack-@$$ery.

By the way, do you run into a lot of folks with ties to Hale Center? We seem to meet people all over who lived there once, or have relatives there, etc. My wife laughs about how she went to a high school with 3,000 people and she never meets anyone from there.

I graduated with a class of 41, in a town of less than 2000 people, and I meet people from there all the time.

My wife laughs and calls it the Hale Center connection.

Yes, it is funny the people you meet that have the Hale Center connection. It seems people either are from there/know people from there, or they've never heard of it!

That's great your kids chose A&M and USAFA. I actually lived in Colorado Springs for four years after college and met my husband there (he was stationed at Ft. Carson). It's a great place and I'm sure you all will enjoy visiting her.

We did decide to go to the basketball game on Saturday. I can take the verbal ribbing just fine. Of course it will make things easier if we beat them! It sure has made living in Lubbock a lot easier since we beat them in football this year!
