Any information on Friona, TX would help. It looks like I may be moving there for a job. Thanks for the help.

Don't have a lot of specifics, but the following goes for just about anywhere in the area:

Lots of feedlots, you'll have to deal with cow poop smell occasionally.

I assume the folks there are friendly and open like lots of the Panhandle.

Reasonable driving distance to Amarillo or Lubbock for major shopping.

The schools are probably so-so. Probably mostly "minority" kids.

Close enough to Colorado and New Mexico to make some really great weekend trips.

If you hate wind, you'll hate it here.

If you like wide open spaces, you'll like it here.

If you're coming from South Texas, you'll probably enjoy having actual seasons.

After six months you'll either think it's the most God-forsaken place on the planet, and be desperate to move.

Or, after six months, you'll come to appreciate the unique beauty and the wonderful sense of community and you won't ever want to leave.

The latter usually happens on a still, clear, moonless summer night when the temperature drops after sunset, and you drive to a dark place outside of town and see more stars than you ever thought existed.

You are the man! Well put. I tend to agree. I have lived in West Texas my whole life. I'm still not "used to" the wind. I hate it. Good news is once you get by that 4 month stretch in the spring, the summer fall, and even most of the winter is ok. The summer and fall evenings out here are incredible.

I didn't know that people moved to Friona anymore?!!? I grew up in Friona and my parents still live there. CanyonAg was pretty spot on.

Nightlife: There is none.
Demographic: It does have a high volume of Mexicans...illegals if you will. Everyone is pretty nice.
Food: Tasty Cream is your best option. They make a pretty good burger and chili-cheese fries.
Smell: Canyon is kind of right. It smells like cow manure most of the time. It is really hard to get away from that smell.
Schools: They aren't too bad. I felt like I had a quality education, but I took all AP & Honors classes. I know some of the teachers and administration and they are all good folk.

Other things, it is mainly a farming community, but the big employer in town is Excel which is a beef processing plant right outside of town. If the wind is right, then you can smell the plant in town.

Overall, it is a quiet town. There really isn't much that goes on there. It isn't a bad place to live....if you can get used to the smell.

If you have any specific questions, then don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the info. I was going to be the Gin Manager there but I ended up taking a job with Farm Bureau in Amarillo instead. Much better location for me.

Insurance claims office in Spearman.
Cover Hansford, Ochiltree and Liscomb (and sometimes Hemphill) Counties.
You work the organization side sounds like.
Good job.
Gene Franks is your counter-part in this area.

Stop in if you're even up this way.

How crazy, I can't believe we're talking about Friona on here.

wreckncrew, I'm from Canyon, but a lot of my family lives in Friona. I go there nearly every time I go home. Small world.

17ag06, you applied for the gin manager job? Did you meet a guy named Jason Wright?

They have a meat packing plant there that pretty much employs the entire town. Dairy Queen was nice. That is all I know.

I'm from Friona and moved back in order to live in a small town. It has not changed much. Schools are still good, Tasty Cream has the best burgers, people are great.
