Posting for a friend/rookie (out of posts for today).....

Hey guys, I need some help. I have lived in Houston TX my entire life with the exception of College Station for 5 years. I just accepted a job with a new company and they are moving me to Pampa. Does anyone have any advice about the area? restaurants? bars? things to do? How are the people? hunting areas? areas to stay away from? (from what I have read already, the North East side is the nicest area to live) nice apartments? gyms?

I appreciate all the help.

There are some very good people in Pampa. I moved to Amarillo from the Houston area and it is a much different world. You will either love it or hate it. I have come to like the area very much. Just get used to the idea of no trees, that is one thing I had to get used to when I moved from the piney woods. If you need any contacts let me know, I still have a few friends in Pampa.

The public land over at Meredith isn't far, and can be ok hunting.

Fishing, there's not much in the immediate area.

The Plaza is probably the best mexican food in town. Dyers, the Dixie Cafe, and the Texas Rose are all decent (I think they are all owned by the same guy). Most of the fast food joints are worth avoiding.

Finding a house to rent in Pampa can take some time. If someone is looking to buy a house, the options are a little better. Caprock Apartments on the west side of town are probably the best bet as far as apartments go.

Bars? Amarillo is only an hour away, right?

The people are generally very nice, although there are a few haters.

things im looking for:
-Apartments: nice and reasonably priced, pool, workout gym or fitness center, in a nice area, and if you know anything about the age range of people that live there.
-Bars or local hangouts: place where i can grab a few beers after work.
-Restaurants and food: decents food places to go eat, I do know they have a Wal-mart for groceries.

Good news: you won't have to worry about hurricane season anymore*

Bad news: you'll have to start worrying more about tornadoes and large hail than you did when you lived in the Houston area

You'll know it's fixing to be a bad day when you see the guys from StormChasers cruising down your street in their armored SUV. And you'll know it's about to get a whole lot worse if they deposit a probe in front of your house and then speed off ...

( *sez this former Panhandle resident who now resides in a coastal evac zone in Brazoria County ... )

One other note about the weather.

You know how in the Houston area the NWS issues a wind advisory when the wind is blowing 20 to 30 mph?

In the Panhandle, such air movement is referred to as a "breeze" ...

Good place for Aggie athletes. They have a street named for Randy Matson.
