Very cool, except the first three are not PD Canyon, they are on highway 60 at the north edge of the city of Canyon.

Google Street View Link will put you about where picture 1 is.

And looking north, you no longer see pastures an the old highway 60, but an underpass and the Hunsley Hills development.

Hey, it's close enough for government work ...

Besides, I get a kick out of seeing pics of Wheeler's old west Curio Shop & Gunfighters Museum, as it appeared about the time we moved to Canyon

yeah, canyon, I know, but it's in the area and that bundle of slides was all titled PDC-61 from a trip the grandparents took

I figured you'd be the only one to look at them and you'd like to see the cowboy from 50 years ago

Nice pics PB! I still remember 1959 when I was 5, my family (parents and 2 older brothers) drove from S. Texas (Sandia) to Pampa in an old DeSoto - had to be 700 miles. Stayed with Aunt & Uncle there and visited Palo Duro. Still have some pictures (B&W of course) of that trip stored away somewhere.

My first real vacation trip and one of the few we ever took as a family - great memories!

On another note, I'm always struck by the sharpness and vibrant color of some of these old photos. I assume they are slides, else the color would not still be there.

What did you do to transfer them to digital format?

And whatever it was had a spot of dust in the middle of the far right side.

yes they are from slides and I bought a USB slide scanner to convert them. It has a little 2x2 viewer that you look at as you scan them, but you do a batch, then transfer them to the computer

Unfortunately, I didn't clean the screen since I didn't really know what I was doing. Once I transferred the pics and started looking at them, I realized I had a problem.

What make/model of USB slide scanner did you use (if you don't mind me asking)? I have a several hundred Ektachrome & Kodachrome slides that need to be digitized ...

It's a wolverine f2d. It works ok. It's not the best interface, but it seems to work much faster than scanning old pictures with a scanner.

I got it at fry's for about $110.

I'm probably going to sell it once I get finished with it. You're welcome to borrow this one when I finish with it if you are in the DFW area.

Great pics.

Is the Sad Monkey railroad still there?

I remember that big cowboy! We used to eat at a cafe there when I was a kid. Is it still there?

Blast from the past.

The cafe under the cowboy is long gone. The cowboy himself is in very poor repair. There is a "Save Tex Randall" group out there, but IMO he ought to be torn down as the eyesore he is.

Several good places to eat in town now, let me know if you're coming through and I'll give you a list.

The Sad Monkey was the victim of a fight between the guy who ran it for years and the then Supt. of the park. The Supt. didn't want amusement park type attractions in the park, wanting a more natural state. So he started making more and more demands until the owner could no longer maintain the contract.

So it's gone out of the Canyon, but you can see it on the side of the road. A homeowner who lives near the park bought the engine and cars and displays them in his front yard a mile or two east of the entrance.

My wife and I gave money to the Save Tex Randall campaign. She's from Canyon and he was a staple of her childhood.

Her parents have a business just a block away and they wish he'd go away too. I think he's great.

Powerbiscuit: thanks for the offer, but I live in the Houston area and don't get up to DFW very often. I'll probably end up ordering one of my own through B&H Photo.

CanyonAg77: thanks for posting the Sad Monkey video link. That brings back memories.
