I grew up in the Amarillo AFB era and recall B-52's (and others) coming and going often. As part of SAC Amarillo AFB often received practice flights from Offutt (and others) simply because of the wide open spaces and clear air (most of the time).
The runway at Amarillo AFB is still one of the largest/longest in the world and is apparently still a rendezvous point for practice flights from Whiteman given this article.

Nice link, thanks.

You might also enjoy this link. A guy that works at the Amarillo FBO, TAC Air takes photos of some of the transiting aircraft.

We used to have some old ww2 type bombers fly over our house in the 70's and the whole house would shake...and that was only about 4 planes.

I can't imagine what it felt like in Europe during the war when there were thousands of them.

My family's farm is outside of Memphis (actually closer to Lakeview or Plaska) and when I was plowing in the summer, I would always get buzzed by B52's or B1's and those dawned T38's from Altus.

Altus did not have T-38's -

But ATC Reese at Lubbock did and so does ATC Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls...

Altus was a SAC B-52/KC-135 base until 1968 when it changed over to MAC C-141 and C-5, then AMC with C-17 Globemaster III, since 1993 AETC maintenance on the monsters such as the C-5, etc. - all monster planes compared to the T-38 trainers.

Enid is a UPT base with T-38s.
