SANFORD, TX Memorial Day is Monday, May 25 and for some people that means getting out on the water to celebrate. The only boating ramp open this year is Sanford-Yake.

Lake Meredith on Thursday was at 6.8 percent capacity according to waterdatafortexas.org. One year ago it was at 0 percent.

Lake Meredith remains the largest lake in the Panhandle and this weekend officials are expecting many visitors.

Paul Jones, Chief Ranger at Lake Meredith said, "This is first boating weekend of the year, so a lot of folks will be getting them out of storage."

Jones said remember to have your boat registered and check safety equipment such as boat's fire extinguisher.

About 3 miles from the lake right now. A heck of a lot of rain fell here yesterday morning. We drove around mid morning looking at all of the creeks/draws and they were running pretty good. Just hope my house in bushland isn't in bad shape. News reports in Amarillo showed a lot of streets in bad shape.

Lake Meredith is governed by the Canadian River Compact. The States of New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma are all parties to the compact created by agreement of the three states and the federal government in 1950. According to the compact, New Mexico can hold 200,000 acre-feet in Ute Lake before it has to release water to Texas. Texas also can only hold 500,000 acre-feet in Lake Meredith before it has to release water for Oklahoma.
