Born and raised in BCS and could use some info on Amarillo.
What are the school districts like?
Good neighborhoods to live in?
Things to do out that way?
I have two young children (5 and 3).
Weather?
Just any info on Amarillo would be great.
TIA

I can tell you as someone who moved to Amarillo from SE Texas, I love it out here. I've been out here for 13 years an this is my home now.

Schools all depend upon the district you end up in. When we moved, we chose Bushland ISD and they are AWESOME. Our oldest (7) loves his teacher and school. Our youngest just turned 5 and he is at St. Mary's and he loves it there as well.

As far as neighborhoods go, we chose Bushland because of the schools and we wanted a little acreage we have 20 acres here and are only 7 minutes from I40 and Soncy (the loop). Nice houses and great neighbors so far.
Don't overlook Canyon, it's a little further south, but was #2 on our list. Stay South of I40 and West of I27 and you should be fine in Amarillo.

Fun things to do out here depend on how active you want to be. The Palo Duro canyon is great (we actually went down there yesterday for a picnic). You have the mountains just a few hours away, Lake Meredith is just North of Amarillo and it has recovered a tremendous amount of depth this year due to the rains we've been blessed with. There are semi pro sports available if that is your thing. Usually there are some decent music acts that visit Amarillo or down to Lubbock.

As far as the weather is concerned, if the idea of having 4 seasons appeals to you, you will enjoy the weather. Yesterday, it was 38 in the morning and was 71 in the afternoon. We do get some snow, but it is not as big of a deal as it is down bcs. It's actually kind of fun.

I'm sure CanyonAg will be along shortly. He is a wealth of information.

Any other questions, just ask. Someone will be along shortly with solid answers.

One last thing, the people out here are some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. The fast paced, take no prisoners approach that seems popular in the larger cities south of us is not the norm out here. Some of the finest people I've ever met have been right here in the panhandle of Texas.

jtp01 covered the high points and I can't disagree with any of them. Bushland was a town of 300 with an elementary school when I worked at the Ag Exp Station 30 years ago. The kids went to Tascosa or other Amarillo high schools. Eventually, housing developments started working that way, and the school population exploded. So it's an up and coming high school.

Canyon ISD has had a great reputation for decades. About 20-30 years ago, booming population in south Amarillo lead to Canyon opening a second high school, Randall High, in the Amarillo city limits.. It and Amarillo High divide a lot of the affluent population of south Amarillo, with Bushland getting the west areas.

Canyon High (in Canyon) draws students from the south end of the county, and to about halfway between Amarillo and Canyon. That's where my kids attended, it's a good school.

Tascosa is probably the next level down, followed by Caprock, Palo Duro and River Road. Highland Park is an anomaly, poor (financially) students, and a nice tax base, so good facilities.

As far as neighborhoods, there are lots of developments outside the city limits if you like that. Not only old farm communities like Bushland, but places down in the Palo Duro Canyon, like Timbercreek and many others. Staying south of I-40 and west of I-27 is good advice for Amarillo. In Canyon, avoid along the RR tracks and extreme SE part of town. Anyplace else is good/has it's + and -. An exception in Amarillo is that there are some really nice neighborhoods along Tascosa Road to the NW. I know little about them.

Weather: Whatever you like, we have it. Four seasons, often extreme. But huge swatches of the year when the weather is really, really, nice. We're 3000+ feet higher here than in B-CS. We're a lot drier, a lot windier, and often cooler. When we hit 100, it's not as oppressive as 90 in B-Cs, because we have a lot less humidity, and a little wind. And then, when the sun goes down, the weather cools off.

For example, College Station average high in July is 95, and it only cools to 75 at night. But in Amarillo, the high is 91, and the low at night is 65. It makes a huge difference on comfort levels and outdoor activity.

Things to do, the old joke is that we're in the middle of the best fishing in the USA. Just drive 500 miles any direction. Seriously, while there are some limits nearby, it is wonderful to be close to the pretty parts of New Mexico and southern Colorado. In under 5 hours, you can be at: Red River, Colorado Springs, Santa Fe, Ruiodoso, etc. etc. Lesser traveled areas, some even closer: Johnson Mesa, Lake Altus, OK, Capulin, Clayton Lake, Ute Lake.

Really close by: Alibates Flint Quarry, Lake Meredith, Palo Duro Canyon, Buffalo Lake NWR, Muleshoe NWR, Caprock Canyons, Caprock Canyons Trailway. Lake McKenzie, Panhandle-Plains Historic Museum, Panhandle Square House Museum, TTech Museum's Ranching Heritage Center, Hale County Farm and Ranch Museum, Windmill Museum Lubbock. If you are here in the summer, catching the outdoor drama Texas! in Palo Duro is a must-see.

Got to go try to be productive now, so I'll shut up and wait for questions. I'm like jtp01, I really enjoy the friendly people here. The climate and openness of the plains, I love as well. The latter is a matter of taste, I know. Some people can't stand it, and can't wait to escape. Some, like jtp01, embrace it and love it. Give it six months to a year, I suspect you'll love it, too.

While you contemplate, check out the photo thread on this board. I just added a few new pics to ttt it.

Thanks. I enjoy taking them. BTW, there have been some previous threads along these lines. Don't know if you scrolled down and saw them. One reminded me of another attraction: The Charles Goodnight Home, in Goodnight. And don't forget the world-class art museum in Canadian, The Citadel.

Check out the Amarillo Convention and Visitor's site for general photos and PD Canyon photo contest (I won a division a few years ago)

And though his photos are more toward the South Plains, Rolling Plains, and deep West Texas, anyone who grew up west of I-35 will get a tear in their eye over this video of Wyman Meinzer's photos, with music by Doug Smith of Petersburg, Texas.

Cant emphasize enough the seasons.

I was born and raised in Houston and spent 6 years in B/CS before moving up here.

The lack of humidity is awesome. Last year between September 7th and June 6th, we did not get above 90.

The only things I miss are trees and fresh seafood.

I lived in Amarillo (before moving to a small town 70 miles north of it) and when my friends asked what it was like I told them it was big enough to have all the conveniences of a big city, but small enough to avoid a lot of the problems.

As usual, CanyonAg hits an information home run.

Thanks, you represent the area very well.

I grew up in the Houston area as well. My wife is from Sunray and is an Aggie also. Depending on how long you have been up there and what your occupation is, I'd bet you know my in laws.

Thanks. I was lucky enough to grow up here, but the wife went to high school and Jr. high in Houston.

She LOVES having seasons.

jtp01 & CanyonAg were right on, except Canyon didn't emphasize the Amarillo High School (Golden Sandies). I lived in Amarillo for 30+ years before retiring. It was great! I loved it. But I did leave my 5 snow shovels there when I retired to the N Lake Travis area in 2013. You'll love the Amarillo traffic compared to most anywhere! Agree Bushland is now nice. One of my former employees has a very nice home on about 10-20 ac for sale near Bushland. Loved the comment "a little wind"! Plus the occasional feedlot air drifts!

I live in Lubbock but spend quite a bit of time in Amarillo for work. It's a nice area. Bushland certainly seems like the place to be right now...it's quite the little boom town. Vega isn't bad either if you want an even smaller town feel.

Everyone above is spot on. The weather is great aside from the handful of days a year that the wind is unbearable (dust storms). It does smell like feedlots if the wind is right...you get used to it.

Being from east Texas, it took me a while to get used to the terrain but I don't mind it now.

If you're an outdoorsman, it's a great place to live. Great bird hunting, great deer hunting. The only downfall for me was that the bass fishing is limited...certainly not East Texas if you're a bass fisherman. I've gotten over that...I think.

For me I love being close enough to the mountains to take weekend ski trips. From Lubbock to Santa Fe, it's about 5 hours. It's about 4 hours from Amarillo. Santa Fe is a good hill as well. Should be really good this year. The snowfall predictions look incredible...Godzilla El Nino!

Great info above. We love it. Biggest drawback........I work a statewide job and our kiddos attend/graduated from TAMU.....the drive. So darn far from the rest of TX. I like driving, generally find it relaxing. But we are a long ways from most of TX. Closer to FIVE state capitols than Austin.

Our daughter rides for A&M Equestrian and we are big football fans. Add in work and we drive. And drive. And drive.

Moved from the area several months ago. Canyon was our home and I would suggest to anyone moving to the area. All you need on a daily basis and a short drive to Amarillo if you need more. Great community feel and plenty to do if you have a family. Bush land isn't bad but it always seemed to be just a cluster of homes and a school. Not really any character and I don't mean that in an offensive manner. Enjoy the area it's a great place.

Does your work require driving? Amarillo has decent air service to Dallas, DFW, Austin, SA, or Houston. Plus the Amarillo airport isn't a pain to get to from most any place near Amarillo. My youngest son's fish year, 1997, I think the wife ('74) & I made 17 trips to TAMU for ball games, Corps marches, Corps trips, etc. We could leave after she finished teaching school at Bonham MS & make Midnight Yell! Several well known speed traps to dodge! You get to know 287 real well! I moved S when I retired in 2013. I just saw two great Amaillo Ags, the Jennings, there last week near campus for their granddaughter riding for the Ag Equestrain team that kicked SC 14-2, I think.

Bushland has had water supply difficulties recently. Overbuilt for water supply. I'd check into the water situation before deciding on Bushland.
