CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - West Texas A&M University officials have announced the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is closed to the public until further notice due to fire and safety concerns.

WT President Walter Wendler made the decision to close the building following a recent inspection by the state fire marshal's office, which identified numerous and ongoing safety issues.

"We cannot ignore the seriousness of the fire and life safety risks posed by the existing museum buildings," said Wendler. "Since my arrival, I have been working to find solutions and address the ongoing challenges with the museum building. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a workable solution."

Assistant State Fire Marshal Chuck Allen said the violations pose significant safety risks and must be addressed promptly.
Terrible news. Ninety-year-old buildings can't easily be made whole.

Numbers being thrown around of $100,000,000 to fix

CANYON, Texas Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is closed to the public until further notice to address fire and life safety concerns, West Texas A&M University officials announced today.

WT President Walter V. Wendler made the decision to close the building following a recent inspection by the state fire marshal's office, which identified numerous and ongoing safety issues.

"We cannot ignore the seriousness of the fire and life safety risks posed by the existing museum buildings," Wendler said. "Since my arrival, I have been working to find solutions and address the ongoing challenges with the museum building. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a workable solution."

The violations pose significant safety risks and must be addressed promptly, said Chuck Allen, assistant state fire marshal.

"We have spoken with President Wendler about the ongoing violations and problems with the existing museum structures," Allen said. "President Wendler's decision to close the museum while corrective action is taken is in accordance with the State Fire Marshal's Office recommendation."

Some of the fire marshal's findings already have been corrected. However, other building issues will require substantial funding.

"The museum staff has worked diligently to address immediately solvable issues," said Heather Friemel, interim executive director of the Cultural Foundation of the Texas Panhandle, which oversees the museum under the umbrella of WT.

Other issues like sprinkling the facility, eliminating dead-end hallways and ensuring that all building areas have immediately accessible exits require more extensive and costly renovations to the facilities.
WT, which owns the buildings in which the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society's collection is displayed and stored, hired an engineering firm to present solutions and costs to address the fire marshal's report and other deferred maintenance issues. The total cost for needed renovations and repairs totaled almost $100 million.

Here's the master plan for it from an Article back in September. It looks like if they get the full funding for it, It will be really neat. I didn't know that the 100mil includes updating the theater in the canyon.

Whew, I'm happy to see there is a plan, and they aren't simply caught flat-footed.

It looks like to me, they have had a plan to update it for awhile now but this fire inspection made them realize it needs to happen a lot faster than expected. I'm wondering if this is why they closed the basement awhile back.

It's sad to see it close but hopefully they can get the funding they need.

Update on current status (not much change) and ideas for moving forward.

Wendler raises funds for his Institute but didn't lift a finger to raise funds for the museum.
This man has his priorities wrong.

My guess is that Wendler closed the museum as a power move to force more funding from the A&M system. Running the museum costs WT about a million a year, and I suspect they want A&M system to fund it, not WT. I agree that the A&M System should kick in some cash. The museum is a statewide resource, not just a Panhandle one.

However, what I've read, there seems to be plenty of blame to go around.

You can read the State Fire Marshal reports online. There have been problems for years, and nobody has done diddly squat, as far as I can tell.

Some of the problems will require Big Bucks to fix. Sprinkler systems and fixing blind hallways and lack of exits. Firewalls blocking off some of the large exhibit spaces so a fire would not spread.

But lots of the noted problems seem to be laziness and incompetence.

Material stacked in hallways and stairways was repeatedly mentioned. Simple maintenance issues like breaker panels not having all the plates blocked off.

How freaking hard is it to put crap away and not block the exits? Or to do a job right the first time?

So who's to blame?

Wendler, because the guy on top is always responsible.

The museum director and staff, who allowed the fire violations to occur, multiply, and be ignored.

The Panhandle Historical Society, who owns the artifacts, and failed to be a good steward of them.

I am a member of the latter, as I give money to them. But I was not aware of the deficiencies. There is a board that is elected to oversee the Society. It appears they were not doing their job. Being On The Board shouldn't just be an honorary thing to put on your resume and get your butt kissed. There should be a responsibility to the history you're supposed to preserve.
