It interferred with my last weekend of quail hunting.

It interfered with my book-reading! wait...no it didn't. More like it encouraged me to stay indoors.

Since I am new to the area, how bad was Saturday's dust storm? I'm guessing that it was way above average, given the fact that it reached East Texas, but how prone am I to see another one like that one in the next 2.5 years?

It was bad, but I wouldn't say way above average. I mean, the headlights on my truck didn't even come on automatically at 3:00 p.m. from the darkness.

Let's just say that the odds are more likely that you get hit by a meteor sitting in the Forum at the law school than that you don't see another dust storm like that.

I remember as a kid back in the 70's we had dust storms simular to the one on Saturday several times a year.

Here are some pics from Coleman while we attempted to hunt quail Saturday. How much worse was it in the Panhandle?

Edit: It would have been a beautiful day to be on Lake Coleman fishing for mudcats.

Having grown up in Amarillo during the 40's and 50's we saw Kansas blow to Oklahoma over Texas and back several times a year... One of the reasons a "swamp cooler" was so effective - it helped to wash the sand out of the air so we could breathe - with a wet washcloth over the face too I might add... nasty stuff...

In the early to mid 60s, I remember one year when you couldn't see the fence posts alongside the road west of the Oslo Lutheran Church.

What impressed me was the way my grandmother and my father insisted that was nothing compared to the Dust Bowl.
