This summer we're taking a crew of scouts (14-18 year old boys) to Philmont Scout Ranch, and spending the night in Amarillo on the way. Can anyone recommend a good place "with character" for dinner and a place for breakfast? They enjoyed the Texas Roadhouse last time, but I'm looking for something other than the chains. They've already voted for Joes' Crab Shack on the way back for their "victory" dinner.

The Big Texan is an obvious choice, but I don't feel like spending $15 for a chicken fried steak.

Come down to Canyon and eat at Feldman's. Best Mexican food: Tacos Garcia.

You should call the Kwahadis and go see one of their summer shows. They dance a lot during the summers. kwahadi.com It is a Scout venture troop and they're very good. It is a really cool facility and the dancers are great. If you're going to Philmont, the Kwahadis usually dance on Mondays at camp. But their shows at the Kiva are better.

I'd recommend Pizza Planet for straight up good pizza. If you're coming through on I-40, hit the Red River Steakhouse in McLean for their catfish. Giles (between Clarendon & Memphis on 287) also had great catfish. I'm not sure they're operating anymore.

Tony, we usually stay at a motel, but I'd like to pass the information on to the troop to consider - do you have cost information and a contact?

Hey, Scout, you can stay at the Kiva. Their contact info is on the website and they LOVE to have Scout troops. I think you'd need to talk to Charles, or maybe Janet.

Thanks, guys. I remember now who Troop 80 is. Their reputation preceeds them, and is a great one. Those of you who were members are blessed to have had some great opportunities available to you.
