Good Mexican Restaurant

I have lived in Lubbock since 2002, and am currently working on my MBA. In that time I had not found an extremely good Mexican restaurant until recently. Montelongo's on Clovis Hwy is pretty damn good, and reasonable price. Also tried Jalisco's for the first time not long ago on Ave Q and it is almost as good. I know there is already a restaurant thread, but I wanted to focus on Mexican.
(I am not overlooking Abuelo's, I just don't like to pay a lot to get more atmosphere and average food)

Jalisco is awesome. I always get the Carne Asada tacos on flour tortillas - a ton of food, for under 4 bucks.

You're welcome for that HighT. I also dig their horchata.

Tachitas, by the K-Mart, has some pretty good breakfast burritos and enchiladas.

Cancun which is on south University across from the KFC just south of the south loop is now open. It serves authentic Mexican food and is the best I've had in town. Big portions for little prices.

I've never heard of the place mentioned by Ft.Worth above even though I live near the area. It must have closed.

Tachitas is on 66th street, east of University next to the meat market. I'm not sure if it's that good or if it was just that I enjoyed having the place to myself in the morning. Then they started advertising...

I'll have to check out Cancuns. I've heard other people say good things about it. Maybe there will finally be a restaurant that can hang around for awhile in that spot.

Try all of the smaller places you want. None of them can top Abuelo's though.

I like Montelongo's, but Durango's is the fave around here.

Too bad gas has gone up so much. I would say head Northwest to the small town of Muleshoe and eat at Leal's (this is The Original). It is good mexican food at affordable prices. I have been there several times since moving back and have been told the quality is slightly less than in the past, but I still choose to eat mexican food there rather than anywhere in Lubbock.

Just got back from Montelongo's...

Awesome.

I'm going to die of enchilada contamination and I'm just fine with that.

I've been a long time Jalisco fan and I still love their carne asada tacos, but the enchiladas and service at Montelongo's are significantly better IMO.

Tacos Garcia is awesome! Run by the same people who do Jorge's in Midland, I believe.

And what's the name of the place in Amarillo that's kind of in the ghetto, in a residential part of town? It's in what looks like used to be someone's house, and every day at lunch it's hard to get into. Last summer when I was working up there I ate there a lot for lunch, and was veeery unproductive for the afternoons. Some of the best greasy Mexican food I've ever had, but definitely the kind that requires a long siesta afterwards.

Tacos Garcia in Amarillo (Ross Street) and Jorge's in Austin and Midland/Odessa.
