Okay, it seems like everytime I get ready to drive down there for a game, I wonder what is the quickest easiest route to take. I think I will be taking the trip twice this fall, probably with my 7 year old son, so some fast food places with bathrooms and french fries is a plus, though not required.

There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

You're a bus driver and you don't know???

Perhaps someone with a membership can do a search, but this has been covered before. Short answer:

US84 to Roscoe. I-20 through Abilene. Highway 36 to Temple. Loop around Temple, continue on 36 to Caldwell. Highway 21 toward Bryan, Loop 47 (?) around B-CS, comes in by Easterwood field.

There are variations, such as heading due east out of Lubbock, and picking up highway 6. Some folks will cut south at Sweetwater and take some back roads that run south of highway 36. But for the absolute straightest shot, that's the way to go.

Also the shortest distance is to go through Temple and pick up highway 53 then 485 to intersect highway 6 just north of Hearne. The downside is that you have to drive through Temple and the developing area to the eat of it, as well as several little communities and intersections where you have to slow down and stop. It is also narrow and twisting and sometimes crowded with slow drivers. If the 7-year-old is subject to car sickness, don't go that way. But if you like a challenge and it is still daylight, it can save a few minutes.

Easy gas/food/potty stops: Post, Sweetwater, then most of the little towns down 36, except the REALLY little ones like Gustine, Rising Star, etc. Hamilton is a little tricky because there aren't any food/gas stops on 36, but if you turn north downtown on 281 for a few blocks, there are a few places. Temple has several easy stops, but it seems like Abilene has darn few that are easy to get to.

Long stretches with no easy stops: Post to Snyder and Sweetwater. Sweetwater to Cross Plains, Gatesville to Temple.

You can make the trip in abuout 6.5 hours, though I'd allow 7 to 7.5 with a kid.

Or you could just get rich and fly your own plane down....

One more thing - if you decide to go through Temple (which is the best) and it is during the day, try to stop at Greene's Sausage House in Zabcikville (right outside of Temple). It is great!

Oh, and remember, never speed between Post and Snyder and as you are going through Hearne. Good luck and happy trails - I would say see ya along the road, but unfortunately due to work I will be flying to Austin and riding with a buddy (Southwest Airlines here I come!)

You could also go 84 to I20 to Hwy 6 in Eastland. Eastland is pretty close to halfway. No places to eat right there at I20 and hwy 6 except for snacks at the shell station. I prefer the hwy 36 route mentioned above, but I made the trip so many times that occasionally I took some back road off of 36 and jumped over to hwy 6, just to mix it up a bit.

Isn't that the truth. I grew up in Hale Center, and I would vary the route just to keep from driving myself bonkers with the same boring drive. I also enjoy seeing different country. My brother told me about the Sweetwater cutoff, I haven't tried it yet, though I have cut off at Sweetwater going to Austin from the Panhandle.

I believe they go from Sweetwater to Brownwood to Goldthwaite to Gatesville. Don't know if that adds a little or a lot, but it would be different.

You could also go SW-BW-Lampassas-Temple.

i don't think cutting through gatesville adds too much. the last time we went out for the tech game in college, half the crew went through gatesville and the other have went the straight shot. they stopped in gatesville to pick people up and i think they may have been an hour behind us. and we didn't stop except for gas.

???? You go through Gatesville regardless of if you go 36 or Sweetwater.

I myself grew up in Sudan and traveled that way all the time. As for speed, the route to Abilene then 36 to Temple and then through Temple on 53 to 485 was the fastest. I used to make it in 7 hours and 15 minutes doorstep to doorstep and there was one time a friend and I took an hour break in Abilene and still made it that fast (grant - that time was not exactly legal according to the speed limit). The thing about it is the 36 route is actually very senic in itself - Gotta see the "Deep **** Cattle Company" outside of Gustine, the convience store as you are leaving Hamilton that has great fountain Cherry Coke, the big bridge across Leon River (when you are from the panhandle, any bridge over water is a sight to see), Green's outside of Temple and then the beauty of 485's farmland. With satilite radio, it takes the challenge out of finding a station between CS and Temple, but it is still all good. Enjoy the trip and have fun....if you have time, stop at the Historical markers, etc. Those are the greatest times I remember with my father!

The stretch on 84 between Snyder and Post is nice as well.

The problem I had with going up Hwy 6 was the traffic. I always seemed to get stuck behind a tractor for miles. Otherwise, it's a nice drive and it does get you on IH 20 ~50 miles up the road from Abilene. I still prefer the 36 route, though.

I once made it in 6.5 hours, but that was only stopping once for gas in Sweetwater and driving over the speed limit most of the way with little traffic. Definitely count on 7.5 hours for a normal trip.

I just made the drive couple days ago, 422 miles

US84 to Roscoe. I-20 through Abilene. Highway 36 to Temple. From Temple, take S-53 for a couple miles until you turn off on 485 which takes you to Hearne, then it's south all the way on 6

I like that way the best instead of going to Caldwell

The back road through Temple on 53 and 485 is fine, though as the area east of Temple continues to develop, I suspect it will get slower. Already the speed limit stays much lower much further east than it used to.

I always tell folks 485 is fine if you like twisty roads and have a car built for them that also has enough oomph to pass quickly when needed. I also only recommend it in daylight, especially the first trip.

I have nothing new to add. I'm a HWY 6 to Hearne, FM 485 to Zabcikville, SH 53 to Temple, HWY 36 to Abilene, I-20 to Roscoe and HWY 84 to Lubbock guy.

This thread is saturated with nostalgia for me. I miss the days of driving back and forth between home and "home."

Now I'm stuck in this HELL they call Houston. Feeling a little Mike Graham - I Miss West Texas.

I prefer going up to Waco and cutting over to Gatesville...actually I usually go up that way and then coming back go down to Temple and Caldwell. I usually stop in Hamilton to get a case of Dublin DP if I have the money.

I think you can get to Gatesville quicker than you can get to Waco.

BAck in the 70's early 80's it was the 485 flyway - there were no cops and maybe a hayrake on that road. If you weren't going 80 you weren't going at all.

Hey, I appreciate the input....I am really looking forward to taking my son Tanner to his first Aggie football game. He has no idea, growing up here in Lubbock....he thinks tech is college football, though I have made sure he knows where his future lies.

I just drove 285 between temple and Hearne yesterday. There is construction and about a 5 mile section is one lane and you have to wait on a pilot car. When i come down i take 6 all the way and stop in Dublin to pick up some DP. It is a nicer drive i think than 36 and it rarely takes more than seven hours.

Just to echo rillo: avoid 485. I drove through there yesterday (had not seen rillo's earlier post), and there are two sections where the road is down to one-lane and I had to follow a pilot car. It took me an 20 minutes or so to travel five miles.

I am going to say it still depends on when you are driving...I took that route for the first game and was coming home on Sunday morning and other than having the 5 miles that was not paved, it was still all a two lane road. I can guarentee it is the fastest route (if you don't have to wait on the piolt car during the day). I have driven that route way too many times and if you are looking for a record, you can make it from Lubbock to CS in about 6 hours and pocket change without stopping. With the little one, it might be a bit longer due to stops, but if you are driving at night, then as my family always did, they would sleep, I would drive.
