I have a family member that's been offered a job in El Paso that he almost can't refuse. He has a wife and two girls (16 and 8). Where should they live? They're used to suburbia(Katy near Houston and Mansfield in DFW) and their price range may be $300-400K. El Paso is so far out there that I sometimes forget it's in Texas. What's the living like out there?

I honestly don't know where the 300K-400K neighborhoods are. Are there any that high here?

Helloooooo! Anybody there?

Well, I've seen some homes in that price range on a few different sites but I don't know anything about where they might be.

I believe the homes in that range are mostly off of Country Club Road. It's what Mesa turns into west of I-10.

Head 4.5 hours east to Midland. That's not too bad of a commute, is it?

Around the El Paso Country Club are the majority of the nicer homes. Take Country Club Rd west across Doniphan to Vista Del Monte. From Country Club it may look a little tacky but drive down Vista Del Monte a little and the houses are nice.
A lot of people brag about Kern but it seemed to me like the houses were old, small & overpriced. You could drop $300K on 1,800 sqft. house that doesn't even have refrigerated air.

I'd tell them to stick to the west side. Off I-10, take Sunland Prkwy north across Mesa St. where in becomes Shadow Mountain Dr. Off Shadow Mountain, go North (rt.) towards Coronado CC.

..Or turn east (rt.) on Mesa st. and go north (lft.)on Mesa Hills Dr. Anywhere around there is good.

BTW, my condolences to your family member.

Now this is the stuff I'm looking for. What's he about to get himself into (if, in fact, he does take the job). I haven't been to El Paso in years and that was just passing through to California.

I lived there for 6 months and absolutely loved it. Its definitely a different mind set out there. Things move at a slower pace. There is little to no traffic, cost of living is cheap, low crime rate (as long as you stay in the right part of town), amazing climate, and tons of outdoors stuff to do within 2 hours drive.

Its not as metropolitan as say Dallas or Houston but all in all a good kind of low stress place to live. Make sure he knows to get on the El Paso Aggie Club e-mail list to find out about Happy Hour and the monthly mtg.

Thanks Snapper. He's not an Ag and I don't think he'll be looking for happy hours but he could get some business deals out of it.

That sounds great about the availability outdoor activity. For him though, the extent of his outdoor activity is golf. As long as there are some good courses out there, I think he'd be okay.

If you have any other tidbits to share I'd be greatly appreciative.

As far as the golf is concerned there are some good courses in El Paso, especially Painted Dunes. It is one of the best deals you'll find anywhere, especially twilight rates during the summer. You can play on one of the best public courses in the state in a GPS-equipped cart for $13 if you go at the right time.

there is some really good golf out here - especially for the price. nmsu, sonoma ranch, butterfield trail, painted dunes are all nice public courses in the area...
