I'll be in West Texas from Friday to Wednesday for some recruitment events. My B-day is Sunday so I was wondering of good places to eat that are open on Sunday or if not Saturday Night to celebrate.

Where are you staying and how far are you willing to drive? West Texas is kind of a large area. You might want to be a little more specific.

That’s true! I'll be in Abilene but probably hanging out in Midland with a friend of mine that lives there.

If you are going to be in ABL, check on Perrini Ranch. Can't miss place in the ABL area.

When you get to MAF, I don't know any local favorites, but they have the normal chain stuff...

People who eat at chains when they are out of town.

Humpit. I agree. I would rather find a local place and try it, but I have clue not one, other than Jumbaritto in MAF

Here is the link to Perini. It is in Buffalo Gap. Know where that is???

Lived in San Angelo for 37+ years and was always worth the trip up north.

Non Chain places- Joe Allen's, though not as good as Perini. There are some other TexMex and Italian places on S. 1st too, but I don't remember the name of them.

As far as Midland goes, I'd suggest Wall Street Bar & Grill for steaks/seafood. There are probably 20 good Mexican food places, but for a more "upscale" Mexican place with a unique menu I'd go with Cancun Grill. Both of these places are downtown and only a few steps from the Hilton.

There are 2 good (non-chain) Italian places in Midland. Can't go wrong with Luigi's and Venezia is good too.

By the way, Wall Street Bar & Grill is owned by the same people who have Mac's Bar & Grill in Arlington. I've never eaten at Mac's.

how the hell can you say you live in Abilene and can't think of non-chain places. . .

Harolds BBQ - Ronnie Ingles and even Betty Rose's have as good a barbeque as about anywhere
and then you got
Sharon's BBQ and Lytle Land and Cattle
and
Joe Allen's Steaks and Barbeque
not to mention
The Beehive downtown, and Albany Mercantile in Albany
but come on !
Perini's in Buffalo Gap - dang this guy is on Tex Monthly and Southern Living and NY Times list of best restaurants and you've never heard of him. He's been on the Food Network, he cooks for the President at Crawford

just thinking of Buffalo gap reminds met that I need to visit Deutschlander Garden - the fish house at Buffalo Gap, go try that joint out sometime.

Mexican food - lots of choices, some people love one and everybody else hates it - Casa Herrerra and Farolitos and Los Arcos and El Fenix and Monterrey and Alfredos even Enrique's and Dos Amigos are worth a try to see if their recipes meet with your approval. Hell there's two or three bakeries like La Popular that have better Mexican food than most chains.

if you live here and haven't eaten at one of these fantastic places, you need to get outside more, live a little, there's more out there than Logan's roadhouse, Red Lobster and Spaghetti warehouse. I would be ashamed to say I lived here and hadn't eaten at any of those places.

you're probably one of those guys that complains because Abilene doesn't have an Applebees......

Midland
I'll second the Wall street Grill suggestion, but add that I like to go to "The Bar" and order a steak or prime rib. His stuff is wonderful, and a great bar too.

In Midland you can try a new place that goes by the name of "Patron" it is really good and has alot of food to choose from. Friends of mine own it and the Grand Opening is actually this saturday. Place has two bars even...it is located on the corner of Wadley and Midkiff in the San Miguel shopping center. Good eatin!

Humpit N. Yellags I have to agree with you about chains. I love eating at the local places and that thats why I am greatfull to everybody that has posted. This will give me a good list of places to check out while I'm there. Thanks everybody!

The Sheik is right about The Bar in Midland. The food is great and it's a good place to do some heavy-duty drinking.

If you want to spend a little more money eating in Midland, The Garlic Press is very good. You can expect to spend at least $40/person if there is no alcohol involved.

Shiek, you must have read my mind (admittedly a short story) before you replied to defroach.
I cant believe you live in Abilene and have 'never heard of this ranch'......geez, the old saying 'Ignorance is bliss' must be true.

Add this to the list. The Butternut Cafe, S4th and Butternut. Tiny diner, with great food. The Green Chili Burrito is fantastic, but share with a friend. Its about the size of a rolled up Sunday newspaper.

for that matter, I'd just as soon eat at the Dixie Pig as about any chain restaurant I've ever found.

For the record, ive lived here for six months and am gone most weekends, so that is why ive never been to buffalo gap (but was going to go out there and try the steakhouse but didnt know the name of it the other weekend, sleeted and not worth the drive).

As for the mexican places, i have not found any of them to be that great. Ive tried farolitos, enriques, el fenix, casa herrerra and ta molys, and none of them had stood out as being as good as most mexican places in other towns. I am not talking about chains, just mexican places in other towns have better food than abilene. But that is my personal opinion....

And where is los arcos and alfredos? Id be willing to give them a shot....

Also, I do like BBQ on occasions, but not some place that i would go out to eat at all the time. I have had sharons and joe allens, they were good, but they werent anything better than other BBQ places.

And no, i do not like applebees, I actually despise the place. The only places that abilene has that are not chains consist of BBQ places and mexican places, there are no Abilene spots to go grab good food and a beer. I did enjoy spanos before it closed, but that wasnt a place to really have a beer with the meal. I guess there is Alley cats in the mall, but its in a freakin mall. Even a bennigans type place where they have a bar and a restaurant....

MEAg09,
Cresent City is now Patron's Mexican food and they are pretty good - all we tried was the Weekday buffet though.

I would add Dos Compadres as a good Mexican Food place in Odessa (Near 42nd/JBS Parkway) and Midland (South of MC on Garfield).

Michael's BBQ & Hamburger place is popular among visiting and aspiring Aviators. Pretty good grilled food. Illinois & Midland drive is older but has more model airplanes. The A Street & Wadley location is newer but has less models and more posters.

roach-

Hit up the Beehive, downtown at 5th and Cedar. Their menu is expensive (its worth it if you want to drop the coin) but you can get a great hamburger for 7 bucks, and their bar is good in comparison to other Abilene restaurants. Talk to the bartender, Megan, and she'll treat you right.

defroach. You don't like el fenix? tsk tsk.

Los Arcos is great. It is up on Ambler near Grape St.

Alfredo's has two or three locations. S. 14th and Matador, Pine st. near Hendrix, and Judge Ely Across from Rosas.
