Hi all,

My girlfriend and I will be moving to Midland in August after we take the Bar exam. We would like to rent a house in the area and were wondering if anyone had any advice or contacts. We want a house as we have two dogs and don't want them locked up inside all day.

Thanks,

Advice: Start as soon as possible.

Housing is pretty crazy out here in Midland.
Apartment are going up everywhere.
Some Apartments should finish soon (near northside Walmart).
Hotel business is booming due to people living there - from what I hear.

Unless there is a Oil Bust in the next 5 months, I would start calling ASAP.

housing is a pain. it is hard to find houses to rent, and they move quick. As the above poster said, call now.

Dang, I really didn't want to hear all this. I will be moving to Midland shortly.

The girlfriend is also looking for a rental home.

What are the "good" parts of town?

There really isn't a "bad" part of town except the far south and east, near Lee Freshman and Midland Freshman. Once you go drive around, you'll know which areas are "bad", which are "good" and which one aren't really neither. I'm sure if there are any decent houses for rent they will be centrally located in town, like off Neely somewhere near Lee High or Midland Christian. That's just off the top of my head though.

Most of the growth is in the Northwest Quadrant of Midland.
Maybe you can find a few of the "For Sale by Owners" and get a Rental Deal - who knows.

If looking at a realtor.com site 79707 & 79705 cover most of the newer areas.

Best Elementary is Scarborough Elementary.
Best Junior High is Abell JH.
These choices would send you to Midland Lee High School.

Midland High>>>Lee academically.

I went to Midland Lee and would have to respectfully disagree. They're essentially the same, both offering the same honors classes for which you can receive AP credit, and I've never heard anybody brag about the academics of one over the other. If you graduated from Trinity, well then you've got a case.

jwnichols and rtrd, I've got a 3bd/2bath house for rent, 1 block from Midkiff and Wadley. We're still getting it ready from the last tenants but I wouldn't mind giving a couple aggies first crack at it. Here's my email if either of you are still looking:

I graduated from Lee, and we're moving back to Midland in a few weeks.

If we get the house we have an offer in on, my kids will go to MHS. Given the housing market there, we decided that we were going to find a house that worked for us and where ever it fed into was where the kids would go. If you limit your criteria too much, you won't have any houses to consider. The market is that crazy.

We did a lot of research on both schools. Considering demographics, TAKS scores, English as the primary language criteria, Lee ranks higher in those categories. But the difference is what I would consider insignificant.

If I don't find a house soon, I'm going to be living at the KOA. I don't know what school that feeds into.

No KOA spaces. With all of the wind turbine, oilfield, construction and BS refinery workers, there are not any trailer spaces in the Permian Basin.

I saw some houses going up near ranchland country club. They looked like 3 bedroom houses. Just a thought

I think even if you live in a District for one High School you can pay your way into the other High school - but its your money.

Midland also has some private schools:
St. Anns Catholic - up to 6th or 8th grade. (haven't checked recently)
Midland Christian School - Church of Christ based 12 year school.
Midland Christian Academy - (I think 12 year now) run by a non-denominational school in the Greek fashion - I think. Self-paced, almost like half-home schooled, but don't quote me.
Midland Trinity - 12 year EXPENSIVE Christian School, good school, but bring your checkbook.

My kids went to MCS & St. Anns and are now in Public Schools. I know kids who have been to all of these schools and all have their pluses and minuses.

Most are very good "sheltering" schools.
That was our purpose until Junior High and High School for my 2 kids.

Wife and I are doing a corporate month-2-month apartment so that she'll have time to look.

Been back five days and I love it!

Is there a fitness center in Midland/Odessa with Lap pools?
Cowtown Red
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I used to know a few places in OD where there were lap dances, but no lap pools.

rtrd, one that comes to mind would be the YMCA in downtown Midland on Big Spring. Memberships were really cheap when I use to work out there, but it's been a long time.
rtrd
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Thanks west...and you too cowtown.

This is crap, only two new apartment complexes in the Midland/Odessa area in the past 25 years. Won't even be finished til the end of August.

Yeah I hear its crazy out there. Aren't they almost done with those apartment complexes behind the Wal-Mart (Midland) off the loop? I'm sure there's already a huge waiting list though.
rtrd
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Don't think there's a waiting list. They're expensive as hell though:

Oh scheet! Does each apartment come with a weekly BJ or something? Those look like Houston apt prices. I guess its simple economics. Supply and demand.
Cowtown Red
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's The Palms, westicles. And yes, there is already a sizeable waiting list. And you have to put down a deposit just to get on the list.

(edit) now, we needed a 3BR, and there was a wait for those. may not be for the smaller ones.

Neighbor down the street in Midland is doing a for sale by owner at 3900 Crestridge - expect a $200K plus pricetag though.

I'm hoping there's not a list for Dorado Ranch in Odessa. That's really the only other alternative besides living in crappy apartments.
Cowtown Red

Keep your fingers crossed....

I may have bought a house.
