Canyon, are you going? I'm flying down from Wichita to go and visit a classmate currently stationed there. Looks like a fun day! It would be a bonus to round up some Aggies for lunch.

Afraid not, it's a 4.5-hour drive one way and I expect to be planting corn. Plus I'm making the 9-hour drive to Aggieland the next weekend...gotta save the gas money.

Does sound like a lot of fun, though.

Dyess always does a good air show. Would come up from Angelo to see it.

Better than Midland's CAF Airshow?

The Confederate Air Force show is a different deal, IMHO. It is more about WWII planes, etc where Dyess is an overall air show.

Both are good and if I still lived in Angelo, I would go to both.

Damn. I always miss the good stuff. I'm going to be in Brownwood this weekend.

i will see if i can find it to post it, but i read an account on dyess........edwin dyess.

the man is from eastland, attended tarleton state, joined the air force, was on the bataan death march. came back home after escaping a japanese war camp and running around with guerillas in the jungle.

on a flight training exercise, i cant remember exactly, something happened to his plane, he had the option to eject out but was not sure the plane would stay out of a neighborhood, so he stayed in the plane until it crashed killing him instantly.

a push was made to have the cmh bestowed on him, but for whatever reason was not successful, but if i remember correctly he is buried in eastland or albany.

i am not sure how accurate this is, but this is wiki, not the link i am looking for.

your were missing an underline in the url

Texas Handbook

and from this link without the space - TexAgs doesn't like the url
http://www.techb astard.com/afb/tx/dyess.php

quote:
Origin of current name: Named in honor of Lt Col William Edwin Dyess (1916-1943). Captured by the Japanese on Bataan in April 1942, Dyess escaped in April 1943 and fought with guerilla forces on Mindanao until evacuated by submarine in July 1943. During retraining in the United States, his P-38 caught fire in flight on December 23rd 1943 near Burbank, CA. He refused to bail out over a populated area and died in the crash of his P-38 in a vacant lot.

For the time I was stationed at Dyess the airshow weekend was either scorching hot or rainy. It was always a great time either way. Not as popular as a Abilene/Cooper football game, but almost.
