I was thinking about taking my kids to the Zoo in Abilene when we pass through next week. Is it worth the stop? Many animals? thanks for your input

Just the Giraffe bridge is probably worth it for small kids.
A nice medium sized zoo.

BTW, use the indoor exhibits to cool off from the usual HOT outdoors.

went about 20 times in my youth and have great memories of the place (even when I was crapped on by some exotic bird)

wife and i went a couple of years ago and it's still a great 2 hour adventure for kids for a cheap price. highly recommend.

what they said

if you have time, a side trip by Frontier Texas might cap off your visit. Ask at the Zoo about roundup passes. Those will give you admission to several Abilene attractions at reduced prices.

I used to be in mid-management at the zoo. The zoo has come a long way in the last two years. When I was there, not much got done. With the new director, a lot of things are finally getting done. The renovated Discovery Center is really cool, and they have new Rhinos (the former elephant exhibit - was way too small for elephants). You might also check out the Grace Museum - they have a cool kids area. Frontier Texas is alright, but is not worth the cost of admission in my opinion. The zoo is still very cheap - around $3 for kids and $4 for adults. I'd go in the morning (9 or 9:30) or after 3:30, as that is when most of the animals get fed (both times) and when they are most active in general. If you go in the afternoon, most are asleep. Be sure to get some rye crisp crackers to feed the giraffes!
