I am bringing the girlfriend and a friend of ours from Dallas for a nice weekend. The friend (sip but cool) is a high school football nut and is mostly coming to see a West Texas football game (sadly I told him we don't need to see my alma mater Central). The main reason for the trip is to visit some good friends in Lubbock and let the girlfriend see her sister, who mistakenly is going to school up there.

Thur - Dallas to Angelo

Fri - Hang out in Angelo, go to Abilene High/Cooper football game on way to Lubbock

Sat-Sun - Hang out in Lubbock, then to Dallas

A lot of driving, yes, but need to get out of the big city and back to God's country

Any help for unique things to do/see/eat or other random advice would be greatly appreciated....

(I know most of Angelo since I grew up there, but hit me with anything) I'm thinking about the Barrow museum on Friday if anyone is interested. Did I hear something about a brewery in Eola?

i'd take the Cisco exit off of I-20 to cross plains, to coleman, to ballinger and on paint rock/eola to make it to the museum on thursday.

if you're eating lunch and being at the brewery won't time it right, grab Big-O's in Valera on the way from Coleman to Ballinger.

I'd do some Twin Mountain Steakhouse, Franco's, or Zentner's Daughter Thursday night and maybe go down to the river or something afterwards.

Friday morning go grab breakfast wherever and head downtown and do some shopping there on concho street.

head out to Perini's as per the Shieks suggestion before the game.

I personally wouldn't make the trip to Lubbock. I can't think of much there I'd want to go do over something in Angelo or Abilene. That's just me.

Thank c-jags!

The main reason for the trip was to go to Lubbock to see friends and the gf's sister.

I was able to ask everyone to take a day off and travel to Angelo. I want to show them around and haven't been home in a long while.

We are also leaving Dallas about 5pm, so the museum and such will have to wait until Friday. It is a fast trip and a lot of driving, but great to just get out of Dallas.

So I should go to Perini's on the way to Abilene. What type of food is it? What are they known for? What point is best to leave 83 to get to BG?

Please tell me about Big-O's as well. I always want to hear about dives!

I'd plan on getting to Shotwell at 6-6:30 tonight. It is sold out, the Fair is going and the Rodeo starts the same time as the game. The traffic is going to be a mess up until the 2nd quarter.....

Well for anyone that cares, we had a great time in our quick trip through parts of West Texas. Highlights of the trip included:

Barrow Museum in Eola – great as always

Eola School Restaurant/Brewery – you would never think to find a small brewery out there but it was quite good. The owner was nice and took us on a tour though the old school house and how he makes the beer. The Irish Red and IPA were both good (amazingly better after a few glasses ). They surprisingly have quite a few activities and concerts out there as well.

Perini Ranch Steakhouse in Buffalo Gap – wow! Thanks to everyone who recommended this one. The jalapeno bites, filet, hominy with green chilies and cheese, bread pudding were outstanding. Why is it so far from Dallas?? www.periniranch.com

Abilene High v. Cooper – My hat goes off to The Sheik (name on here) for going out of his way to not only allow us to use two of his season tickets, but for also taking the time to buy an extra for us. If you truly want to know what I imagine an Aggie (and good person) to be.…well then he is an example. We all had a great time at the game, and it came down to the wire. Yes, the parking and traffic were not good. TheSheik, thank you again for your help and kindness towards us. Please thank your wife for also allowing us to displace her a bit during the game..still feel bad about that. Good luck to your son and Abilene High the rest of the season.

Drove through the fog in the middle of the night to get to Lubbock. The 7.8 inches of rain a few days before made for some interesting sights the next day.

SMU v. Tech game – I had a free ticket, so out of the kindness of my heart I went to the game (secretly cheering for SMU however…which sadly felt like cheering for A&M there the last few years). It was about as expected.

Sunday – Back to Dallas along 180. I’ve never taken that stretch of highway before and felt we needed to. Beautiful drive! I did not want get back to the land of concrete.

Don’t worry, I wasn’t going to end my trip without one. We stopped in Anson on the way back and I got a few for everyone. The reception was as expected.

Thank for the advice and help from everyone. It was a great time.

glad you were well taken care of, pwonk. I've only met The Shiek once, but he's one of those that yall like to call a 'Good Ag'

Glad you had the Green Chili Hominy at Perinis....too many folks eat there and dont experience that delicacy.

And I wish you'd let us know about your return on 180. Everyone needs to stop in Palo Pinto (just west of Mineral Wells) and eat at the Palo Pinto Cafe. The best chicken fry I EVER had. And the meal comes with chocolate sheet cake like yo momma used to make.....
