ok, ags, i recently decided to take a promotion that will take me out of San Antonio, and to Midland. I am 26, single, and have no idea what to expect from the town, people, entertainment, etc. I grew up in Boerne, but since graduating A&M in 2005, i have lived in Atlanta and SA. any words or advice would be greatly appreciated.

gig 'em.

the water sucks, the wind blows, and its hot as hell in the summer, but on the flip side the traffic will be better than what your used to, the people are friendly, the high school football is king, and the sunsets are awesome.

Welcome.

What to expect - compared to Boerne - simply put a little bit more tan/brown than green. The sun shines over 300 days a year and the wind blows nearly everyday. No smog. Don't expect what you see in the TV show Heroes (mountains...LOL).

Start looking for a place to live immediately!
Housing may be a little easier to find, but a few months ago it was impossible. Best places to live depending on income would be North and West Midland. Rural places are available also.

I grew up in Katy, went to A&M, left for Albuquerque, then back as far as Midland.

I have lived here for 15 years and I will not move. The climate out here is perfect to stave off my chronic bronchitis. It may be remote but it is an affordable and accessible city. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Traffic is getting a little more congested (for Midland) but any big city person will laugh at it.

As was said before the water sucks, but you get a water softener and filter and all is good.
It is as hot(100-110F) as hell's half acre for usually a month each summer. Make sure your AC is up to the task. Plenty of golf courses - if you can learn to play in the wind. No water sports without driving an hour or two. We have semi-pro Baseball, indoor Football, & Hockey (yes Hockey!!). Some of the best high school football games are played out every Friday and Saturday out here.

The summers here are going to be much more tolerable than the ones in San Antonio.

We decided to rent until the market corrects somewhat.

I moved back in June, and as stated, it's not quite as bad now as it was then, but it's still a very inflated market. If you decide to buy, you'd better make damn sure it's someplace you want to be for a while, because you're going to have a tough time reselling for comparable prices.

If I was a single, happening dude, I'd check out The Palms. There may be a waiting list.

They should be close to opening up some apartments near the Midland/Odessa border line at El Dorado off of Faudry Road - I bet there is a long waiting list though.

thanks for the replies guys. i'll only be relocating for at max 14 monthsso buying a place is a non-issue. the company i work for has a "problem" in Midland that i am being sent in to fix. once i fix it and get everything situated and moving along smoothly, i should be able to write my own ticket. in which case i will probably be headed back to one of the metro areas.

anyway, i will working on the northwest side of midland, so probably looking for a place around there. i have a kickass water filter that can make raw sewage taste like Evian so the water thing doesnt worry me, but thanks for the heads up. my golf game has gone to ****, so i doubt i will be playing, but i am interested in catching a couple permian or lee games (have they played each other yet?)

i am just curious where the decent bars are and if/where good Ags go to watch the games.

again, thanks for all the replies.

Some units are complete, but they're still finishing up quite a few buildings.

Lee and Permian are overrated. Those Bulldogs are getting it done this year.

Lee is not very good. Permian is very good.

You still may be able to get a 1 BR at The Palms in NW Midland.

Anything that moves you from San Antonio to Midland is not a promotion

Move to Big Spring, where the housing in affordable and commute. People are a whole lot friendlier over here also.

Charlie, I strongly disagree.

San Antonio is a fun place to visit for a few days. Other than that, it's a nice place to be from.
