Unquestionably one of the greatest to ever play the game of football. Passed away at 94 years of age at the Fisher County Hospital. Please remember his family in your prayers.

If you're ever back in the area, stop by the Vet Hospital in Rotan & say howdy.

I wondered where you had been

Sammy Baugh as quite a guy. I know you Fisher County guys have run across him way more than me, but I got to spend a few minutes with him at different times in my life, all the way back to when I was too young to remember and he ate supper with us while we were stationed in Stillwater.

Mom always said, Sammy had two versions of every story, one was 2 minutes long and one was 20 minutes long and the only difference was the amount of cuss words in the telling.

I heard him tell the cuss word version of the football to the forehead story.

From the NYT article today
quote:
"One time there was a defensive lineman who was coming down on me with his fists closed," he once told The San Antonio Express-News. "A couple of plays later, I found a play we could waste and I told our linemen to just let him come through.

"The guy got about five feet from me, and I hit him right in the forehead with the ball. He turned red and passed out. It scared the hell out of me."

the 20 minute version ended with
"You could see the X where the end of the ball had hit him right between the eyes. I thought I kilt that big ugly sumbich."

excellent article from several years ago

quote:
Sam Baugh turns 90 today.
"You sure?" he asked skeptically.
His small, bright eyes appraised the stranger.
Reminded he was born in 1914, the former TCU All-American and only surviving charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame used an index finger as a pencil, doing the math on his kitchen table.
By God, he declared.
Baugh has been known to invoke the Lord's name.
A look of surprise lit his seamed face.
"I guess that's right."
He couldn't say if he feels his age because he's never been this age before. How the blankety hell is 90 supposed to feel?
Sam threw back his toothless head and laughed.

He had 4 interceptions and threw 4 td's in the same game once. Don't see that stuff anymore.

He still holds the NFL punting record. His son David, along with one other guy won the state track meet for Rotan in 1962. Good folks.

I happened to be in the home of a big TCU fan recently and noticed a football signed by Bob Lilly, Sammy Baugh, Kenneth Davis and a couple of others.

I asked about the ball and the lady told me that she came across it for sale after a football game. The bookstore was selling footballs and they were opening the boxes to make sure the balls weren't damaged. She said there were several that were autographed by the guys mentioned and she bought it.....for 20 bucks.

I offered her the chance to get her money back and she politely declined.
