We're leaving Monday to spend Christmas in Alpine. Can anyone suggest where to eat, or if anything interesting will be happening there or in Marfa? We'd also like to attend midnight services if there is an Episcopal Church there.

Places to eat...Reata, Alicia's, Edelweiss, and La Casita are in town and good. Edelweiss has a microbrewery on site operated by a German brewmeister. Longhorn has changed ownership and isn't what it was. Outside of town you have The Gage in Marathon and the Paisano Hotel in Marfa. I never hear of people going to Hotel Limpia anymore.

I hope you enjoy the area, I'll be there myself.

Have a safe trip. We're leaving this a.m., staying one night in Fredericksburg and then on to the Holland in Alpine. Hubby and I met there, so it's going to be a special holiday. We'll definitely hit the Reata.

Sorry I missed this thread. Headed out to Alpine again. I love it.

Wasn't a good trip for us. The restaurant/brewery in the Holland had closed, the rooms were decorated in early Goodwill, and the restaurants where we tried to eat on Christmas Eve told us they were only taking reservations from locals. Not the friendly place that we remembered, although we did enjoy shopping for art and had a wonderful Christmas dinner at Indian Lodge in Ft. Davis.

We came home through San Angelo and really enjoyed a great room at the Staybridge, a great meal at Miss Hattie's, great shopping at Holland Jewelers, and the best Christmas light show ever on the Concho river.

Sorry your Alpine part of the trip wasn't that good, but glad you enjoyed Angelo.

If you ate at Miss Hatties did you go across the street to Eggemeyers?

Eggemeyers is ALWAYS on my list when we go to SA. I can spend hours in there and always find something I just can't live without. We also like the wine store in the little shopping center across from it.

Growing up, we shopped in Abilene, San Angelo, and Austin. My first three saddles came from Donaho's Concho Saddlery. The last one I had kept was stolen, and I really wish I had it back. We plan to retire closer to our children, and, although SA is not as close as we'd like to be to them, we have always wanted to live there.

Oh, and I forgot. I still wear a Texas Beef Cattlewomen's necklace from Hollands, and cherish the spur and brand tie bar that my Dad bought from there in the 1950's. GREAT place!
