There's a chance I might take a field position out in Seminole, Tx.

If so, I'd like to buy a house or maybe even some acreage.

Most make the commute from Midland. Others make the commute from Hobbs, NM. -- Any suggestions?

Single, Married or Family? (...and No, I'm not looking for a date)

Midland is 2 hours each way, yikes!
Lamesa is 1 hour away.
Hobbs is 55 minutes.
Andrews would be 45 minutes away and put you closest to Midland/Odessa.

Currently single, but I'll probably get married before I move out there next year.

Is it really 2 hrs from Midland? Geez...I remember it being just over an hour.

How nice is Hobbs?

Seminole is just over an hour from the north side of Midland if you take Hwy 158 over to 1788 then straight up Telephone Road.

The drive from Midland is a solid hour and a half and it sucks. Hobbs is the armpit of the USA. Seminole is small, but there are some good people there. There is no justifiable reason to commute from Lamesa to Seminole.

Seminole is not a bad little town, other than the fact that is fairly small. Is that the only reason you have for wanting to commute?

Stay away from Hobbs. It really has nothing to offer, unless you like gambling I guess. It also has a high crime rate.

I would rather have a commute that is twice as long if it meant living in Midland as opposed to Hobbs. Odessa is a little bit closer and not as nice as Midland, but definitely not as bad as Hobbs.

Brownfield, Lamesa and Andrews are all decent towns too, though they probably wouldn't offer you much that Seminole couldn't.

If you're going to get married and start a family, I'd consider living in Seminole. I live in a small oilfield/agriculture/ranching town like Seminole, and I enjoy small-town life a lot more than I thought I ever would.

Seminole is a bit isolated, but it has great schools and has lots to offer -- such as a first-class public (county) golf course. You're just an hour or so away from catching a Southwest flight (in Midland or Lubbock) to anywhere.

There is no night life, no movie theater, etc., and only a few restaurants in town, but if you don't mind the simple life, you'll get used to it.

I would recommend you look at the "can do !" Midland attitude vs the "do what?" attitude of Lubbock. Better yet, ask the Oxy folks in the Levelland area who live in Lubbock. The one's I know would rather live in Midland to work or would gladly drive an hour and live in Midland if it were an option. Just too far. Lots and lots of folks live in Midland and commute to Andrews and Seminole for work. Lots of car pools on the road. Throw in the new 16 mile 349 north loop reliever route and you have quicker options accessing other parts of Midland off 1788(Telephone Pole Road) and 158(Andrews Highway.) I know folks who catch the Andrews Highway-Big Spring highway in Andrews and then then 349(Lamesa Highway) and come into Midland from the north. This avoids all of the Sams and Walmart messes as well as the 250-191 traffic issues. You'll be virtually 70 MPH door step to door step.

Another thing to consider are future industry job possibilities for you and your familily. Midland has a lot of job opportunities for your line of business and you will be where you need to be if you make a change. Lubbock? No chance of anything unless you like shoveling cotton seed.

I have lived in both towns. Even Seminole would be better than Lubbock. You can have lunch with just the Girl Scouts in Lubbock or Professionals, Land Men, Geologists and Engineers in Midland + the girl scouts!

My recent principal is the new high school principal in Seminole. It is a great school district--not just a good one. It is a great place to raise a family.

If you expect to make this a forever home, it is a good choice. The only drawback is how far it is from Aggieland.

I would recommend Andrews! I know people that live there and they absolutely love it. Also, the drive from there to Seminole is only a half hour or so. And the drive to Midland/Odessa is only another half hour. It's a nice community close to Midland/Odessa. Otherwise, i would recommend just moving to Midland/Odessa. If you are planning on being in the area long term, i think andrews is the way to go. I know people that commute each day from midland to seminole and they say the drive just drains you doing it day-in day-out.

Andrews HS is on the list from the state that performs so poorly that students are allowed to transfer freely to other districts. That means MAJOR test trouble over multiple years.

Again if it is a real move for a place to put down roots and raise a family, then Seminole is a great place.

Just a suggestion...

rent a place in Seminole, get the lay of the land, and then make a more permanent decision.

3rd Gen I'm really surprised to hear that about the schools in Andrews. At one time they were an excellent district with money to burn. All that oil money brought in some really good teachers.

That being said the school board ha been run by a total dufus for the last few years.

I've been in Seminole for 7 months. If you realy, REALLY, like small town life in a dry county, then you'll very much enjoy Seminole.

It is very remotely positioned. If you are working up here, I suggest living in Seminole. The drive to and from the Midland/Odessa area is opressive. The drive from Lubbock is no better.

Browfield and Lamesa are very run down towns that are 40 minutes away.

Andrews is the closest "nice" community to Seminole.

Seminole has some nicer neighborhoods, but it is a tiny town of roughly 6000 people. It is very quiet and people stick to their own affairs. The Mennonites are everywhere...they give the town a real 1800s feel to it.

The weather is nice in the summer. It is very, very dry out here. The winters are pretty cold (In my opinion).

Hobbs has 30k people and is 30 minutes away. It is rough, especially at night. Hobbs has one nice restaurant and a small movie theater. The Casino and race track are enormous. The local shooting range is located next to the prison.

Most of the local grocers in Seminole have huge markups on all their stuff so I brave Hobbs for grocery shopping and the occasional movie.

Seminole and all surrounding counties are dry (alcohol). the nearest place that sells alcohol I know of is in Hobbs. The locals tell me there is someplace in Seagraves (12 minutes away) that actually sits just inside another county line that isn't dry.

Seminole would be a really tough place to live and work for a single guy fresh out of college looking for some excitement. Most of the people I work with that fit such a category are making plans to get a transfer.

Overall, Seminole is the place to be if you are working out here. The drive from larger towns, to me, isn't worth it.

Deer & Beer is awesome! Any place that opts for orange spray paint on round bales versus billboard advertising is right up my alley.

I love living in Seminole. It's quiet enough to enjoy and redneck enough for me to enjoy it too.

I did experiment some with guys but that was when I was young. I met a frat rat at the start of my junior year but it ended before Thanksgiving break.
