We know Abilene High and Sweetwater are going deep, who's your dark horse?

I'm really impressed by Frenship in 4A and I think Monahans is geared up for a run at least to the quarterfinals.

I'm sure Wylie will end up going far like they always do, much to my chagrin.

If Throckmorton doesn't pound everyone on the way to the Six Man state championship, I'll be REALLY surprised.

Ditka, when are the playoff brackets announced?

I'm not sure, I know I'm calling all the coaches in our area today to see what's up, I imagine the OA, MR-T, AP-R, SAS-T and others will run area playoff brackets early this week.

Wylie will face Gainesville somewhere down the line, but nobody gave the Dogs much of a chance last year against Decauter. Wylie HC Hugh Sandefer is money this time of year....

Sorry to disappoint you, WestTex

Yeah I know it, squid. Wylie always irritates me to no end, just because they're Wylie, but Hugh Sandefer is a heck of a coach.

Looks like Southlake Carroll and Abilene High are destined to clash in the quarterfinals of the 5A D-II playoffs. That's going to be a heck of a ballgame.

SLC seems vulnerable this season. I'd put my money on Abilene High, were I sick enough person to actually bet on a high school game.

Big Spring goes to Lubbock against Pampa, I think. First playoff in a long time. FIrst year for our new HC/AD Tim Holt. Came to our Rotary club saying the only way to learn about hard work was hauling hay, a lot of it in the middle of the summer. He makes the kids who get a personal foul (15yds) run 15 miles for making the mental mistake.

Looks as though the Crane Cranes have a great shot at going pretty deep this year

Yeah. Looks like they're ona collision course with Canadian, if I'm reading this right. The #1 and #2 career coaching win percentages in the region, right there.

Don't discount my Katy Tigers before you hand the title game to SLC & Abilene.

LoudestWHOOP,

I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to Katy this year, but I figured they'd be in the mix, and will probably face Carroll or Abilene in the Texas Bowl.

After all, aren't they the only team to beat Carroll since they moved up to 5A?

"Katy (9-0) -- The last team to hand SL Carroll a loss (2003 title game) is strongest squad in Region III."

Katy won 48-0 1st round agains Clements, playing Cy Creek this week.
They are a machine (at least since I left in 1985 )

Big Spring Steers beat the Pampa Harverters and now got to the Sun Bowl against EP Chapin. Maybe Coach Holt will drive a steer horn into the field, sort of like Mike Price with the pick at every UTEP game.

LoudestWHOOP,

I think that a SLC-Katy title game is going to be one epic battle. I'll be back home in West Texas for Christmas by then, so maybe I'll get lucky and they'll play it at Texas Stadium, where I might be able to go watch it.

From the Dallas Morning News' article about SLC's bi-district game:

quote:
IRVING – Playoff performances don't get much more dominant than Southlake Carroll's against Irving MacArthur.

Or so the rest of the teams in Class 5A Division II hope.

Defending state champion Carroll cruised to a 48-21 victory over Irving MacArthur in a Region I bi-district game that was the nightcap of Saturday's Texas Stadium tripleheader.

Imagine how bad it would have been if Carroll's starting quarterback played in the second half. Greg McElroy did plenty of damage before halftime, passing for 278 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for another score.

"Let's bottle this up and pour it out every week," Carroll coach Todd Dodge said.

Carroll (11-0), the No. 1 team in the nation, has eliminated MacArthur (9-2) in the first round three of the last four seasons. Carroll has recorded the three highest-scoring games against MacArthur during fourth-year coach David Beaty's tenure.

Carroll, which has won 58 of 59 games since its promotion to 5A, advances to play Allen in the area round at noon Saturday at Texas Stadium.

Here's how lopsided this game was: Carroll had almost as many points (41) as MacArthur did yards (43) at halftime.

MacArthur didn't pick up a first down until a Carroll offsides penalty with two minutes remaining in the half. MacArthur was scoreless at the half despite linebacker Justin Gent's interception return to the Carroll 7-yard line.

That interception might have been McElroy's only mistake. He completed 20 of 24 passes. He had a 1-yard rushing touchdown to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive on the opening possession.

MacArthur made the score a bit more respectable because of Ron Brooks' big-play trifecta in the second half. Brooks threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Smith, caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Matt Percle and scored on a 76-yard touchdown run.

Go Loboes and Bulldogs!!

Went to Monahans High for my freshman and sophmore years.
Went to Midland High my junior and senior years.
West Texas football is the best. Nothing like traveling 4 or 5 hours to one of your district games, at least back in the old days of the late 70's!!!
