Hope some of you guys familiar with the region can help me out. A few years ago my dad was a contractor on the projects that rebuilt both the Marfa and Ft. Davis courthouses. I remember the Paisano Hotel and the one in Marfa, I can't remember its name. Anyway, I was considering taking my wife for a mini getaway, the purpose to kind of escape civilization for a while and perhaps visit the McDonald Observatory. I will of course have to eat and maybe check out anything else of local interest. Anyone got any suggestions? I don't remember doing much while I worked there occasionaly other than going to the bookstore in Marfa. Is it still getting invaded by hippies?

I cannot remember the name, but there is a neat hotel in downtown( ) Ft. Davis with a pretty good restaurant in it. The Fort is a great visit as is the Observatory, even though it is run by sips. I would also think there are B&B's in Alpine as well. I would base out of either of those towns and not Marfa.

I used to participate in Living History events at the fort for a number of years in the late 80's and early 90's. ( and that is 1980's not 1880's).......

Gage Hotel, Marathon. Is the one in Ft. Davis called the Sutler's?

The National Park Service runs Indian Lodge in that area, supposed to be outstanding.

Have you Googled travel guides and such? How about the "Texas Country Reporter" site? Seems like they have profiled several unique lodges in that area.

I do a ton of traveling throughout that region and my personal favorites are-

Marfa- Paisano (have heard the Thunderbird is really cool too)
Ft. Davis- Limpia (women generally like this place more then men- kinda flowery but really nice)
Alpine- Maverick is awesome
Marathon- Gage

Cibolo Creek Ranch is between Marfa and Presidio and is quite a bit more expensive than any of the above but its is an INCREDIBLE place.

There is also Lajitas Resort in South Brewster County (in Lajitas but near Terlingua).

Hope this helps!

We stayed at Cibolo Creek Ranch for our honeymoon (only one night), and it was excellent. Milton Faber was a man of vision for his day.

We also stayed at the Paisano in Marfa. It is very nicely done. Highly recommended. The restaraunt Jett's Grill is very good, but I don't think it deserves the price you pay. It is a little high.

I was a little disappointed in the Holland Hotel in Alpine, but the price was fairly reasonable. The train was loud, though.

You sure about the name? I've never heard of it.

How expensive is the Cibolo Creek Ranch? And the Hotel Limpia in Ft. Davis is my favorite. Several good places to eat, and the fountain is a must at the Ft. Davis Drug Store to have an old fashion soda.

Our bill for one night at Cibolo Creek was almost $500. That included food.

Mellison- Its pretty new (openned within the past year or two).

Its located across the street from Sul Ross. It used to be an old motor court then one of the construction companies (forgot the guys name) apparently purchased it and did it up. Its really nice.

Good luck "escaping civilization" in a Hotel. If you want to really get away from it all go to the Chinati Hot Springs southwest of Marfa or the Basin in Big Bend National Park.

Cibilo Creek Ranch is nice, but in contrast to the countryside it is a scab.

The Maverick in Alpine was rebuilt by Charles Maxwell a little less then a year ago and is affordable as well nice.

If you go to Marfa eat at the Pizza Foundation. It's probably the best food in the Big Bend.
