My family had a boat sink on Twin Buttes in a storm. We're lucky to all be alive.
For those who are interested,
It was Memorial Day weekend of '93. We had a pontoon boat, and had just got a JetSki. It was Saturday evening and we had tied up the boat for the evening, but I was still riding the JetSki around. My dad's cousin showed up with his bass boat and my family went with him and his family to check a trot line, and I followed on the JetSki. A storm came in from nowhere and caused darkness to come about 45 minutes early. The wind was blowing hard and the swells were about 3 feet high. I was only 13 at the time and had to get in the boat and let my dad ride the JetSki. It was dark and raining so hard we could not find our way back to our camp ground. Pretty soon we gave up on finding our camp ground and just started looking for shore. We couldn't find that either. I couldn't see my dad, and was afraid he had been hit by lightning. A wave came over the back of my cousin's boat swamping and capsizing it. My dad was right there with the JetSki. My family held on to the JetSki, while my cousin and his family held on to the capsized boat. I think we were in the water for close to three hours before the wind, rain, and waves calmed down enough for my dad to haul us to shore one by one. When we were all safely ashore, he went back to our camp to get our boat. We found the capsized boat and towed it back to camp. I can't remember how we righted it and got it on the trailer, but it started and ran the next day. A week later my cousin sold it.
Sorry for the long downer.
That's a beautiful picture that brings back some memories.
