
A Matamoros man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to smuggle a large amount of a marijuana and cocaine into the United States.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Jorge Ayala-Castellanos on federal drug smuggling charges over the weekend.
The 50-year-old Matamoros man drove into the United States at Brownsville's B&M International Bridge in a 1997 Dodge truck.
Customs officers allegedly found 18 packages with 41.9 pounds of marijuana and one package with 2.5 pounds of cocaine inside his truck.
Ayala-Castellanos appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Monday morning.
Judge Morgan denied bond for Ayala-Castellanos until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
