A major store chain could make its way to the Harlingen.

Action 4 News received several calls about the possibility of a Bass Pro Shop coming to Harlingen.

Action 4 News contacted Harlingen's Economic Development Corporation CEO Bill Martin and Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell.

Both told Action 4 News they could not discuss the matter.



However, Martin did confirm there was a board meeting Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. But Martin would not discuss whether the Bass Pro Shop was the topic of discussion.

According to one local blogger's site, "the City of Harlingen is proposing entering into a $41 million dollar investment with Bass Pro and gets a 120,000 square foot store."

harlingen doesn't have an academy and it might work if it's situated next to 77.... who knows. harlingen has a long history of not doing anything or just failing in general.

you guys can both go to H E double hockey sticks. Harlingen is the cleanest, most friendly, and least immigrant contaminated city in the valley.

This is where you lost all credibility. The only thing keeping Harlingen relevant is VIA. If McAllen ever gets their stuff together and expands McAllen-Miller, Harlingen will just be a pit stop for folks on their way to the coast.

this means that when you talk to the President of the United States or whether he is giving a national speech, he will tell you " Towns like McAllen, Texas, Where health care costs are three times as high and results twice as bad."

That is what that means.

not to mention if you want to compare transit authority.

i don't think 281 will be providing any major infrastructure anytime soon.

and if you don't think highways are a big deal ask college station about the recycling center.

i like harlingen a lot. i do live there, but harlingen hasn't done much to improve it's status. it could have had an outlet mall. the mall is a dump, but to be fair brownsville's mall is newer but just as crappy. there isn't a decent bookstore. most people in harlingen don't even know that we have a museum or where it is located. there are some great hidden gem, non-chain restaurants though. longhorn, little rita's, the pizzeria, las vegas cafe...

see and that is the beauty of it.


Harlingen is not driven by the demand set forth by tourists and mall shoppers, fortunately. Fortunately Harlingen is growing at a pace dictated by the home community thus resulting in a quality vs quantity biased.

The even better part is that Harlingen, has plenty of room to expand while cities like McAllen are already in land battles with neighboring cities.

IMO - I grew up in Harlingen, even graduated high school from South. I live in McAllen now and I can honestly say Harlingen SUCKS! I'm actually really surprised at it getting a Bass Pro Shop though.

It would be huge coup for them if they get Bass Pro Shop. I kinda think they'll screw it up somehow.

Too many white people in Harlingen for it to capitalize on being in the Valley. Try selling a decent home in Harlingen, or making a small business go.

Just as an example, my wife has a small business that operates from Laredo to SPI. She has ton of customers in the the upper Valley, McAllen/Mission/Pharr/Edinburg. She has numerous clients in the lower Valley, Brownsville/PI/SPI, some in Weslaco/Mercedes and other scattered areas. She has two in Harlingen. Out of about 110 clients from Laredo to SPI, 2 are in Harlingen, there is just little activity and business there. It is a bedroom community that refuses accept that status.

It is not bad, it is OK, but it does not have one bench mark decent thing to make it standout from any other city its size.

I don't know how proud of that I would be. It has gone broke, what 2 times? It was closed for several years and is basically "The Sizzler" or gambling/race tracks in Texas.

RGV is spot on...the leadership in that town wants to keep it that way...it's pointless

actually, i was shocked to see any development recently (last couple of years) in the logan's steakhouse area

the other big developments over the last 15 years were the facelifts of boggus stadium and el pato...

Valley Race Park is a disgrace. The fact that it's owner is now being an obstructionist about the new track being built in Hidalgo only makes things worse.
