There must be 4,000 acres of sunflowers just south of Alice. Ive never seen them as a crop before. Anybody know anything about them.

I kinda knew that. I'd just never seen them as a crop in South Texas before.
Of course I've only driven 281 through there hundreds of times over 50 or so years, so maybe I'm just not very observant!

I've seen them before in/around the Chapman Ranch area btw. Corpus and Kingsville. Pretty cool. Lots of people taking pics.

Some Valley farmers tried raising them back in the 70's. Crop was basically a flop and never saw them do it again.

I was amazed at that field of sunflowers near Alice.

Depending on the type of sunflower black/striped, used for oil, eating, bird seed, and makes for excellent dove/whitewing hunting after harvest.
