quote:
President Obama is planning to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, heeding calls from border state lawmakers that security needs to be improved.

An administration official confirmed to Fox News that Obama plans to deploy the National Guard troops as needed and request $500 million for "enhanced border protection and law enforcement."

The official said the National Guard would be used to "provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support," as well as support "counternarcotics enforcement" and provide "training capacity" until the Border Patrol can bring more officers on board. The additional funding would be used to improve border security technology and increase the number of agents, investigators and prosecutors targeting drug, human and weapons traffickers.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., praised the administration for "finally" answering the calls for more troops, while another lawmaker said 1,200 troops is "simply not enough."

so now the question is Militarized border or AZ law?

Watch how well this works and then lest figure out how much it costs.

i don't think it will work, 1 troop for every 1.66 miles of border and that would require full time commitment.

The President cant just grab National Guard units and command them. He has to get the OK from a State's governor beforehand.

It has been tried in the past with horrible outcomes (i.e. little american kid took a bullet through the heart). I am all for immigration reform and stronger border security but this won't really be of any use at all.

They will have extremely well defined and limiting orders. After about a week or so there will be big gaps of unsecured areas and we will be back at where we started.

i agree with that, UAVs and microwave fencing seem like the simple answer. there must be some reason they are not pursing technological advances in fencing rather than boots on the ground.

although i have been having the dream lately that russia is going to invade us through mexico. go figure.
