A California man is behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after customs officers alleged found $162,000 dollars worth of methamphetamines hidden in his car battery.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested 26-year-old Julio Mota, Jr. under federal drug charges on late Sunday afternoon.

The National City, California man drove up from Mexico at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge in a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck.

Customs officers allegedly found six packages with out nine pounds of meth hidden in his car battery.

Mota appeared before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Monday morning.

Court records show that the 26-year-old California man is an United States citizen.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Mota until a Thursday morning hearing.
