Construction for Valley's first tollroad begins Monday

Construction for the Rio Grande Valley's first tollroad is expected to begin on Monday creating an alternate route between the Port of Brownsville and Olmito.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials confirmed construction for the upcoming State Highway 550 is ready to start on Monday.

The $34.1 million dollar project is expected to connect the State Highway 48 in the Port of Brownsville with FM 511 near Olmito.

According to a project notes on TxDOT's website, the road spans 2.866 miles.

TxDOT officials said the tollroad will include two 14-foot tolled travel lanes, two 4-foot inside shoulders, and two 10-foot outside shoulders.

The project plans also include non-tolled access roads for adjacent properties.

Once the project is completed, the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority will assume the maintenance and operation of the tolled main lanes while TxDOT will maintain the non-tolled access roads
