Brownsville to Enact Ban on Plastic Bags to prevent and control litter.

The city of Brownsville is hoping to eliminate the litter problem.
Starting January 1, 2010 plastic bags will be officially banned from the area.
With the date just around the corner businesses are getting ready and so are shoppers.
At the El Globo Supermarket, Action 4 noticed customers like San Juanita Garza, already implementing the new ordinance.
She said she's complying because she supports the cause and wants to see less bags flying around.
But there is a problem San Juanita said she keeps running into, which is remembering to take her recyclable bags down.
And in speaking with shoppers it turns out she's not the only one.
“I have a couple of them in my truck right now and I forget to take them off,” said Beatriz Torres a Brownsville resident. “So I won’t have to be buying extras there or get the plastic ones."
It’s that scenario that has some doubtful this ban will work.
Mary Cisneros said many shoppers will just end up buying reusable bag after bag, making the whole concept a little pricey.
“With the economy…we have to be saving every penny," said Torres.
And although these shoppers want to save some cash, the majority told us, they rather help save the earth.
Most shoppers agree they'll just have to just get used to it.
