Feb. 24th and 95 degrees? You have got to be kidding me. I had forgotten about this wonderful part of living in el Valle. I don't think it has rained since I moved back in late October. Oh boy.

Meanwhile my next door neighbor (whose lot is somehow not a part of my platted subdivision) has taken to BURN PILES in his backyard as means of disposing of all of his dead foliage from the recent freeze. It's dryer than a popcorn fart down here and has been windy as hell and this a-hole (transplanted Mexican nationals of course) can't see anything wrong with burn piles in the middle of McAllen city limits. Not only am I waiting for my roof to catch fire now, but the smoke seems drawn through the cracks of my backdoor and into my living room.

Placed a call to the Fire Inspector today. Hopefully it's the last time we have to worry about that.

I thought it was great. Now I can get out and get the yard cleaned up. I am sick and tired of the cold weather. Spent some time outside this afternoon cleaning up all the sidwalks and porch. Gotta get with cutting back all the frozen stuff in the yard.

I guess it is all in the eyes of the beholder! :-)

I hear you Rat, I do hear you.

You know, I honestly do not mind the heat. I just hate how dry it is. I am one of the odd ducks that likes humidity, I hate dry and windy.

I also prefer the heat to the cold, but my preference is temperate. I know that when I have lived in spots where I didn't have to use A/C I always had less problems with sinuses and breathing and such.

In the valley? It was miserable over Christmas- close to 90 degrees.

We had more sub freezing weather this year than I can ever remember...and I can remember a long time (I think?)

Those winters were pretty tough, as was the one in 89', in Feb. of 89' there was a state wide ice storm that made into the Valley and then in December it got mighty cold for about a week.

This last cold stretch in February was cold, but it was not brutally unpleasant like the stuff in the 80's was.

Yes I was here. I grew up in the valley but moved to SA from 67 to 78 after my wife and I graduated from A&M. Then I moved back and have lived here ever since.

We had just bought a new house in 1981 and I recall the cold spell that we had that you are talking about. We had brown outs and it ended up burning out the motor in our garage door opener. It must have been at Christmas time because I can remember the electricity at the house went out and my wife was preparing Cristmas dinner for the entire family (about 25 people) (White knuckle time).

Everything ended up fine and the dinner was good which was one indication that my wife is magic!

Cold weather didn't used to bother me so much but now that I have arthritis it does. I can go out and mow my yard in the heat of a summer afternoon and it doesn't bother me, but these overcast days in the 30's and 40's are not pleasant and are depressing.

I guess my dad's remark that those "golden years aren't really so golden" was more true than I thought.

It didn't even feel like Christmas because it was so hot. It was bad enough that I did not want to play golf.

According to the records, the highest temperature ever recorded in McAllen on Christmas Day was 90 back in 1951. This means that the temp this year had to be in the 80s. I understand that this is a far cry from Denver but most people live here to get away from the freezing temperatures, ice and snow.

I moved up here from Mexico City, I think it was 82' or 83', all I remember thinking back then was I had moved to Hades during the summer and the North Pole during the winter, and good Lord the wind.

I remember several Christmases in the late 90's and early double ought's that were really, really warm.

Me? I do believe in global warming, but I am not too sure about how and or what. But I do believe the winters in the Valley are getting later and ending earlier. Back in the 80's you could always count of a portion of Spring Break to be cold and dreary.

I tell you another thing, where could we check yearly rainfall totals, now that would be interesting going back a ways.

I'm looking forward to the warm weather. It's been pretty cool so far this spring for here.
