Interesting article. It is unusual for an accounting firm to be so blunt in reporting about school districts.

The linkey thing doesn't work, valleyrat. Without having read the piece, I would still guess one could find similar cultures of corruption throught the Valley's school districts. Maybe not all, but more than just B'ville. Heaven forbid they turn the lights on at city gubment levels.

Dirtyred - I am not so willing to tar the entire valley with that brush. I am sure that there are places where things are improperly done, but if you read they newspapers from all over the state you find that it is not uncommon for this type of thing (I know we just had a real nasty one in Pharr not to long ago.)

Born and raised in Brownsille, so happy to not be living there now. Left in 1953 to attend TAMU, have'nt been back since, can't remember when, so long ago.

A long time ex-girlfriend of mine had a management job with BISD for one year. It was in her field as she was working on her PHD so she was thrilled. She held the job one year and took a big pay cut and went back to teaching else where. She was horrified about the corruption and incompetency at BISD.

I doubt all the Valley school districts are terrible, but a big chunk of them are bad. I have heard some really bad things about Roma and RGC, hopefully they are not true.

On a side note, you notice BISD is the only district in the Valley to have a real bonafide K-12 private "large" school to compete against, there is a reason for that.

Brownsville, Pharr, La Joya, RGC, Donna a while back. Anyone wonder how IDEA got so big so fast? They are just filling a need. If the public schools are doing such a great job, there is no market for IDEA. But, corruption in the valle isn't isolated to the school districts. Every level of valley government has it. Corrupt judges, corrupt county commissioners, corrupt sheriffs, corrupt PDs. Why do you think the FBI's field office has grown from 30 to over 300 in less than 20 years?
