No I didn't mean that!

I gave my grandson (13) a single shot 410 for Christmas and he has yet to get to shoot it. I used to take him ns his BB gun out to shoot fish and turtles along the canal but there are lots of houses around. When I was younger(a long time ago) we used to drive out north of Edinburg and we could shoot to our hearts content. I had an old jeep and we would drive down the back roads and shoot quail.

Now there are houses everywhere! His dad is a Srgt in the Sherriffs office and is pretty particular. One day we were driving around looking for a spot and figured out we were on the road to the jail. I don't imagine shooting on that road would be well recieved.

Any of you have a spot that seems like a good spot? (no, not Hargill!)

I have never been to a range but I thought they were just for rifles and pistols.

I was thinking about going out around the old Edinburg Lake.

There is a range in Linn-San Manuel that offers sporting clays and all the other stuff. Really nice and entertaining.

Sigh. We moved here at the tail end of that kind of life in the Valley. It was a much more enjoyable and entertaining place back then, I miss it. We used to do the same thing. We would even drive up the Island and have great time, shooting, fishing, burning stuff, riding motorcycles and such. Now all of that, sans fishing, is verbotten.

Interesting...I'll look into that. My dad and brothers used to go quail hunting fairly often in that area. My dad was close friends with Ramiro Guerra and we had a standing offer to go hunting up on the ranch up there. The ranch foreman's wife would cook breakfast tortillas for us...damn they were good.

I have to admit I wish all these folks hadn't moved down here, but I have met some really nice families that I wouldn't have met otherwise. Us old folks just don't like change much.

Sigh, back in the day would just drive out north of Engleman Gardens until the blacktop ran out and find a convenient ditch bank. Nroth of Delta Lake on Rio Farms was good too.. I guess that is all gone as well. Sigh

I guess it isn't all up to me. My grandson spent the weekend with a friend of his that has a ranch up near San Isidro. Seemed to have a blast. I asked him what they did and he said that his friends dad took them out shooting. He asked me if I heard of a Rueger. He said that they shot one and it was really noisy :-). He said that they also shot at AR15. They went out and shot a rabbit with a 22 and they had rabbit and quail for supper.

I guess the world hasn't gone to hell yet. Sure is nice to have friends!

Yes, there has been some improvement in the make up of the Valley. But it has come at the expense of most of the "country charm" that was present up until the mid 90's. Change came hard and fast to the RGV and hard and fast changers came from Mexico by the eleventybillions. Many a quaint country spot or farm has become a colonia, that is what has really uglied the RGV.

I remember that before deer season I would go to the levies south of Alamo sight in my deer rifle. One time a constable drove up and I let him shoot a few, we had a nice chat. I think I was 16. Today that would likely get SWAT called out on you.

Many times while I was in HS we would have guns in the cars to go hunting after school and sometimes we went before if we could show up late. Today that would be straight to Gitmo or at least a very deep dark juzgow.

The "country charm" for me was more like the late fifties and early sixties. I don't really like some of the changes (too many folks) but that isn't just a valley problem. My wife and I used to live in SA for about 10 years during the 70s and I loved living there. When I go back, the traffic is awful. They have curb side parking at North Star Mall for goodness sake!

Oldvalleyrat, i live close to the range in Linn. They do have skeet and 5 stand set up. Let me know if you want to come out and I'd be happy to show you and your grandson the range. I'm the coach for the Linn San Manuel gun/skeet club and that's where we practice.

Back in the 90s, I used to shoot .22s where Ware Rd ends north of Monte Christo. Those Healds Valley orchards were a good place to jump some rabbits...

I need to check out that Linn range when I move back down there in April.
