Yeah I know I'm gonna get the standard smartass comments. And yeah there are plenty of trashy people and structures down here, but dammit the natural beauty still makes me drop my jaw at times.
I was in north Starr County near the Zapata/Jim Hogg county lines today and the South Texas brush country in spring time is simply gorgeous. It's nice to be reminded of it from time to time.

P.S. No I was not trafficking drugs or people.

Hidalgo is gorgeous too. You just have to keep your eyes open. I swear if people down here took more pride in the right things, this place would be an absolute vacation destination.

Maybe that has been what has changed for me. The people and the "Valley Mentality" is driving me nuts!

I agree the Valley has beautiful places all through out but I can't stand going to HEB or places like that. Everywhere I go I see more and more instances of people with bad manners, that are rude, and don't seem to care about their appearance.

Just my two cents. The RGV is home but it is not the same.

I spent five days in Plano during the Christmas holidays. I saw some pretty disgusting folks there too. Lots of nose in the air...I am better than you are, types too. There are plenty of unpeasant people wherever you go. I have had my share in dealing with people before I retired and I believe that people are the same everywhere. Don't let the bad ones ruin your day.

I guess you have people like that no matter where you go! Maybe I didn't notice it as much down here before but for whatever reason now it just sticks out to me so much.

Oh you're not imagining it. Things have definitely taken a turn for the worse in terms of general aesthetics and "give a damn" down here. That said, it's far too easy to overlook the orchids while looking for a rose. Keep your eyes and mind open (I'm not trying to imply that you don't) and let yourself see the beauty that still exists down here. Frankly I think it needs to be nurtured so that a sense of pride returns to the valley.

...and Cameron County is extremely beautiful, naturally. You just need to know where to go to see it. Go to the Sabal Palm Nature Reserve and have your breath taken away. Go to Laguna Atascosa and get lost in time. Go to Laguna Madre and watch the sun rise.

Don't sell this place short!
