I decided to try a different route to SPI and was very pleased. Instead of taking Hwy 100 and dealing with Los Fresnos and speed traps I drove a bit further south and took the 511 Port of Brownsville toll road that they're building that gets you to 48 and then to the HEB in Port Isabel.
There is not a direct connector from 77/83/2 to 511/550 but once that's done it will easily shave off several minutes and risk of getting speed trapped. Even without the flyover it saved me about 10 minutes.
There were 2 toll plazas at .50 cents each. Well worth it in my opinion.
