Lots of info in the paper this morning but it dances around the real issues.

Is the new University going to have a home base and if so where?

Where is the new medical school going to be?

What's the name of the new university?

It seems like McAllen, Edinburg, Harlingen, and Brownsville all want to have the university and the politics are so involved, no one wants to commit to anything.

Does anyone have any answers?

They are building a new university or combining utpa and utb into one?

From what I have read and some pretty wild assumptions it seems like they will have one main campus (in Edinburg) with satellites in some of the major cities like Brownsville(already has a campus), and Harlingen. I read somewhere that the thought is that the administration of the campus will be in McAllen(?). It sounds like the medical school will be divided up among locations in Cameron and Hidalgo.

None of this seems to be a very well concieved idea so I probably have it wrong! I thought there might be someone on here with a little better insight.

nothing concrete has been released so far since the initial proposals. the utb/utpa merger? nada. new med school? nada. no new info in what, 8 months? what i really want to know is how the med school infrastructure is being funded. hidalgo county was making a huge push and claimed that they were going to raise something like 100+ million over 10 years for the main campus for 1st/2nd years. harlingen would continue on with RAHC.

Thanks for the link, it was interesting. It sounds like that a lot of the courses will be online.

quote:
•The new university will integrate next-generation technology and customized learning to increase access and affordability for all students to become the largest and most successful Hispanic-serving institution in the nation

Hopefully we aren't talking about another University of Phoenix.

if it's anything like utb is doing right now, it's not so bad. i did a masters a few years back and a couple of the classes were spread out in sections all over the valley. the professor lectured via webcam & mic. the various sections met at utb, harlingen's university center, and someplace else. it actually worked out really well. i had one class that met entirely in a private chatroom. you could send messages to anyone without disruption, pull up a webcam, log in remotely (had people in other states), take polls, etc... best class ever.

Administration was talked about being in Mcallen at one time. That is up in the air now. Not a lot has been decided so far although it will be in the coming weeks.

The new school will have access to PUF funds that UTB and UTPA did not have.
