Santillans Corn Tortillas, man I had not thought of that in a long time.
$0.50 Tamales, I was born too late for sure. I used to be able to get them in Camargo for $2.75 or so, depending on the exchange rate, as recently as 2007 and they were really good.
I lived in Brownsville for a while and also used to spend a lot of time in PI, I used to love to go to Capistrans for tortillas, I always liked their tortillas reminded me of Mexico. You never realize what you have until it is gone. I spent from 1992 through 2006 coming in and out of Mexico and primarily returning the RGV as home base. So I always brought Mexican coke, Topo Chico, lest I forget Beer, and tons of food items. I always tried to bring tortillas, the ones in Mexico are soooo much better than the ones in the US, I think it is because of the lime, as in the mineral, they put in their tortillas.
This time of year I particularly miss the Tex-Mex and or Mexican culture.
I am Episcopal, but I almost always try to make a good Catholic Midnight Mass when I can. I will never forget going to my first Midnight Mass in the RGV, it was at Sacred Heart in downtown McAllen. The priest announced the closing of the service and said "we will now close with a hymm" the band struck up "Feliz Navidad". I really enjoyed that and it was the first time I felt truly at home in the RGV.
