They are good, about the best I have had readily available in the RGV.

I used to have a lady I would buy in bulk from in Camargo, those were the best I ever had and she did all varieties (Veracruzanos/Oaxaqunos), etc. It was the first place I had Bean/Jap/Cheese tamales. I lost track of her about 7 years ago so Delia's is my go to. I like Delia's salsa's as well.

Whenever I travel back to the RGV I pack 4-5 dozen and bring them back to Nicaragua. They are good.

I wish they used a bit more bacon grease in the bean tamales. That would be AWESOME

If you order your tamales from Delia's well in advance and pick them up a day early, you won't have those huge lines. Hopefully, with the new store on N. 10th the lines won't be as long.

We always have tamales on Christmas eve for the family so the grandkids can open our presents.

Delias tamales fresh off the comal are the best...with a lil Nescafe!!!

Over the weekend my inlaws called (Georgetown and New Braunfels) and had me order a bunch of tamales for them. Got that done today at the Delia's on 10th street. They are going to come down to pick them up. Price has gone up again from last Christmas. To bad they aren't still $.50/dozen like they used to be.

I know, I know, Oldvalleyrat really is old!

They aalso want a couple of gallons of the awesome fresh squeezed orange juice from Klement Farms.

Klement Farm! I miss the old valley sometimes!

My uncle was a foreman for Elmer-Stahl for many years. He would bring sacks of oranges, grapefruit, bell peppers and the like.

Can you still go to Santillans in San Juan and buy 50 cents worth of corn tortillas?

Santillans Corn Tortillas, man I had not thought of that in a long time.

$0.50 Tamales, I was born too late for sure. I used to be able to get them in Camargo for $2.75 or so, depending on the exchange rate, as recently as 2007 and they were really good.

I lived in Brownsville for a while and also used to spend a lot of time in PI, I used to love to go to Capistrans for tortillas, I always liked their tortillas reminded me of Mexico. You never realize what you have until it is gone. I spent from 1992 through 2006 coming in and out of Mexico and primarily returning the RGV as home base. So I always brought Mexican coke, Topo Chico, lest I forget Beer, and tons of food items. I always tried to bring tortillas, the ones in Mexico are soooo much better than the ones in the US, I think it is because of the lime, as in the mineral, they put in their tortillas.

This time of year I particularly miss the Tex-Mex and or Mexican culture.

I am Episcopal, but I almost always try to make a good Catholic Midnight Mass when I can. I will never forget going to my first Midnight Mass in the RGV, it was at Sacred Heart in downtown McAllen. The priest announced the closing of the service and said "we will now close with a hymm" the band struck up "Feliz Navidad". I really enjoyed that and it was the first time I felt truly at home in the RGV.

I wish they would open a location in Raymondville or San Benito - I work the 77 corridor more than the 281 route.

Having Delia's Tamales in Managua, Nicaragua tomorrow night at a Christmas get together with folks. We will have Mexican tamales, Nicaraguan Nacatamles, and Costa Rican Tamales. All of them different. It is going to be "Lard o' Rama".

Tamales always go better with rum.

My favorite toritillas ever were a big stack of corn tortillas that we bought from a street vendor in San Miguel De Allende. Just amazingly good all by themselves.

That was quite an adventurous trip that included taking a train from Monterrey to San Luis Potosi in the middle of the night. Good times.

A note about Delia's tamales. My first place to visit when I got back to the RGV on Friday was Delia's. I wanted to place an order for frozen tamales, which they usually have, to take back home to Nicaragua.

I go in on Friday morning to the location on 10th and they tell me they are sold out until the 2nd of January, they are not even serving in their restaurant. Holy smokes, sold out of Tamales 5 days before Xmas and even before New Years. So was the Pharr location.

I ended up on south 23rd street and had to "tip" the counter lady $10 to sell me some tamales they had. My God, what has the world come to in the RGV that you have to bribe your way into lard and cornmeal goodness. ADM, this was incredible. But get some I did.

Wife had the same issue with Delia's on N. 10th and had to go to S. 23rd. She was surprised to be met by an armed security guard at the door to inform her that that were not selling tamales except for preorders. Was able to get them at the S. 23rd location. That is a first for us, ever.

I think that all the Delia's stores are tapped out at this time of the year. They have huge lines and security at the doors. I went in to pick up several dozen yesterday and the security guard at the door made me swear on a stack of bibles that I already had an order to pick up before he would let me in the door. (I had my reciept.)

There wasn't much of a line yesterday but today it will be crazy. I learned my lesson to get them early several years back.

No need for waiting in line nonsense at our house. We had our tamalada last week, ate some and froze the rest. 24 dozen thawing out and getting ready to be put on the comal.

My wifes first teaching job was in Santa Rosa back in 1966. At that time (maybe the still do) all of the mamas and grandmas met first thing in the morning at the Home Ec cottage and made tamales. My wife had never been around this activity but had bought all the fixins. It was a money making activity for the Home Ec classes. They made and sold 250 dozen tamales at $.50 a dozen. When the day was over she said she never wanted to see a tamale again! :-)

Went to Delias in Pharr just now...they were taking orders. I asked about the no tamale sale rumor thru January 2...they confirmed it was just a TexAgs STx board hoax! Walked out with the goods.

I have a feeling that in a few years there will be a shooting/stabbing at Delia's. The Valley is on the brink of tamale craziness.
