I am planning on smoking/BBQ on Sunday for our sunday family dinner. Asked Mrs. OVR to get me a brisket about 10-12 lbs at HEB in McAllen. When she came home she was a little upset. It seems that HEB has decided to stock only "prime" cuts of brisket and not the "choice" that they used to. The price was $3.68/lbs for a total cost of $42. Thats pretty steep. I think next time we'll try Sam's. It wasn't long ago that they put brisket on sale for holidays at $.99/lbs.

They said too many of their customers wanted prime quality...don't ask me why. If you cook it right it it is extremely tender and good.

Brisket is not only a good meal but the left overs make the best sandwiches for brown bagging.

HEB is going the way of Walmart, they are reducing the SKU's and brands they carry in a major way. Even the large HEB's are doing it. Forget about the small ones unless you want tortillas, lard, flour, beans, and milk. At least in the RGV.

I am extremely disappointed by the selection of groceries in the RGV. HEB has cornered the market and has no competition so whatever it is they want to sell that is what we/you will get. I have also found prices at the RGV HEB's a little higher than some of the ones in SA or up further north.

I love it when I go to the register and they ask "Did you find everything OK?" and I say "No". They just stare at you, they don't offer any help or assistance. After repeated badgering I did get one of the meat guys at the N.10th HEB to order me some country ham slices, I had to buy half the box for him to do it.

I could get Globe, when they were open, to order me some different things, like Durkee's, SeaPort Coffee, Homestyle Chicken gravy mix, and country ham. No mas globe.

I grew up with the daughters of the guy that ran/owned Foys, El Globo en Brownville, and Globe in McAllen. The management at Foy's is only geriatric friendly. And it is a long way there, I used to shop at Foys when I lived in Mission, but that was a long time ago. When I ended up back in CA, the wifa sold our house, downsized and rented in McAllen so I am screwed.
