Now that the $300 bond election was defeated, you have to wonder where the district goes from here. I certainly can understand why so many people were upset about the size of the bond issue. Several of you know that I was a school administrator in McAllen for years, and it takes a lot of money to keep all those buildings up and running. McHi was built back in the early 60s so it is an old building. I am just not sure why they were budgeting 60 Mil for remodel it when the cost of the last high school, Nikki Rowe, was far less as new construction and it had a big swimming pool.

When I retired I moved to Edinburg so the tax increase wouldn't have effected me, besides I am really old and my school taxes are frozen. But I wonder if the school folks in Edinburg are going to have second thoughts about trying to float a massive bond issue too. The word leaked out that they were going out for $300 Mil after the McAllen issue passed.

It just comes down to the fact that folks are just tired of taxes. Oh, but the way, I just got a letter from the Hidalgo County Tax Assessor and he upped the value of my property by more than 10%.

just do what harlingen does. lowball things and then have cost overruns and massive deadline shifting.

Or do what Harlingen did and provide a comprehensive breakdown of where the bond monies will be spent and provide complete transparency so the voter can make an informed decision. It is really an apples to oranges comparison, though, since the last HCISD bond issue provided for both new projects, such a the Performing Arts Center, the Ninth Grade Academy, the High School for Health Professions, and the new Aquatics Center as well as campus by campus renovations and repurposing of old facilities and, most importantly, did not have the amount adjusted as a result of constituent backlash (McAllen started by saying the need was for $770 million, was reduced to $440 million and was finally put to vote at $297 million). Rather than taking cheap shots at your neighbors, Walter, you would do well to learn from Harlingen's handling of its last bond election and do a better job of informing the McAllen voters.

I do too so I'd love to hear the basis for your previous comment regarding low-ball biding, cost overruns, and massive deadline shifting. Thanks!

I've read previous comments made by you and know you are typically a thoughtful poster. Maybe you were joking with the post and I missed the humor. If that is the case, please accept my apology.
