I have a 2 day 36 hole tournament there this weekend and can't find anything on-line, course layout, hidden hazards, holes that are a must lay up. I have talked to a few guys who have played it and they said it was a bombers paradise, wide open but the greens sucked.

Anyone?

You should have gone to the Longview Country Club.

Best course in East Texas IMO.

I'm not much of a golfer... but from what I understand it's one of the better courses in East Texas and probably the best in Longview.

I'll send this to someeone that has played the course before.

Macks sent me the link here. I've only played the course once with my dad, and no, it is not near one of the nicest courses in East Texas. It is usually full of rig hands on their days off wearing sleaveless shirts and golf gloves on both hands doing the happy gilmore off the tee while downing a busch light tall boy. However, the guys that told you about it being a bombers paradise with bad greens were right on the money, I can't think of a more apt description.

I've played it a few times, but it has been a while. I will try and help from what I can remember.

It can be wide open for the most part. They have a few holes that are a little tight, not because of trees or the like but for the good grass on the fairways. The greens are horrible and normally sh**** the times I've played. The teeboxes well they are there but I've never been there when they were in good shape. The best advice I can give about is do your best to stay on the fairways. A little off one way or the other you are hitting on tree roots or hardpan dirt. If you would have asked a month ago, I had a scorecard but I filled in my handicap excel sheet and threw it away. I have a 17 handicap and played it 18 over on the day I have recorded.

There is one section of the course, I can't remember which side but two greens and two tee boxes are placed pretty close together. It can be a little uneasy hitting into the greens when you can see someone on the tee box which looks like it is right on the green. Don't worry though it is a longer shot to hit the tee boxes than what it looks like on the fairways. Also, be careful there are some power lines that cut across a few fairways that are easily hit. My dad hit the same line twice while playing.

Do you know the person running the tourney? If you do, you might suggest moving the tourney next year to Wood Hollow or Shallow Creek in Gladewater. They are both public and better courses in my opinion than Alpine.

Don't be fooled by the #1 public course in Longview thing they tout. When the voting is going on, the course super offers a discounted green fee if you fill out a voting form. Hell, my dad hates the course and gave it glowing reviews to get the cheaper green fee.

Since you will be up there swing across the street at the Alpine Target Golf Center. It might be the best driving range other than a country club in Longview. If you are really into golf and want to play an evening round they have a little par 3 nine hole course that is covered in lights for night golf.

Good luck and have fun!

Stupid tsips and there spelling of aggie, the greens were sh****, the word that would tell you they were long and slow putting.

also, ruddy is right about the normal players on the course. But since you are playing a tourney i doubt you will run into the "regulars."

well, this course does suck. I noticed as I pulled in a sign that it was voted Best Course in East Texas 7 years straight???? I consider myself a long hitter, but that doesn't mean crap when you are hitting to postage stamp greens that don't hold worth a crap. And once you do get on the green the ball divots and dead spots makes it impossible to stroke a true putt.

I would discuss the fairways but I never seemed to find one. I mean I hit it dead center but still found myself in pure hardpan dirt and sometimes on tree roots. Don't even try and find a sprinkler head with yardage as it is rare when you can find a 100 yard marker. I somehow struggled to a 79 (+9, par 70) from the WHITES! If they would put grass in the fairways and over the top of the tree roots it would be ok as the layout makes you shape several shots.

As a side note, if anyone knows a blonde from Gilmer named Leslie who hung out at McCann St Bar Friday night, let me know

Groundskeeper on the first hole at Alpine had just got bitten by a snake as we were about to tee off a couple years ago.
